Naim Hi-Line DIN-to-RCA

Posted by: docmark on 24 May 2009

Does anybody have any experience with a DIN-to-RCA cable? Currently I'm using a set of Nordost Tyr RCA cables to connect my HDX to my Ayre preamp, but wonder if I'd be better off with a Naim cable.

The Hiline certainly has more of the Naim "House" sound that other cables, but you really need to try one in your system to see what you think.

It is an expensive cable if it only moves you sideways rather than upwards.

Could buy lots of music for £500 Smile

I haven't heard any HiLine cable other than the DIN->DIN version, nor have I heard any of the Nordost cables. However, based on my experience with the DIN->DIN HiLine, I would say that the DIN->RCA version is certainly worth a try. It provided a worthwhile boost to my then CDS3.

Good Luck

I am using the Hi-Line DIN-RCA cable, DIN end to 202 and RCA end to Transporter streamer. Result is quite positive, even more improvement than the Powerline. The system seems to have gained in terms of resolution of details. I am no audio reviewer and cannot really describe the improvement well, suffice to say I was happy with the result.

Naim is funny that way, despite some skepticism; my system has improved stepwise with the addition of HiCap, NAPSC, Powerline and then the Hi-Line.

The RCA ends are fitted with WBT locking plugs; they require some learning curve but fit quite nicely once you get the hang of it. The DIN ends however are painful, with fragile/skinny "floating" pins, very fragile "floating" plug jackets and extremely tight connections once in. I dread to pull them out and refit them since they are so difficult to handle and easy to break.

At that price, I almost think Naim should provision for user error and offer repair or replacement, may be ask the user to buy some breakage "insurance".
