where does PRaT come from

Posted by: Mike Cole on 10 December 2001

I was just wondering which component is the most responsible for PRaT (besides a good recording). If I were to list the order of importance, I would say source first, then pre, then speakers and finally the amp. But then I wonder if I had all Naim components except for the amp, would I still get the same amount of PRaT? Any thoughts?

In my experience, even a more modest amp can be made to jump and sing with a Nait-2, even though the Nait can get a bit breathless with more difficult speakers. At sensible levels, it just rocks!

Of course, everything contributes to it, but I'd say the amp is the key...

I guess it depends. I changed the amp and got alot more PRaT. It seems the load of the speaker or the amount of power an amp can provide and how fast the amp is is important to get more or the right PRaT if the rest of the system is ok.

As my memory serves right it was Mike Hanson who mentioned it first some years ago.

I think the reason I was asking is because I was daydreaming about a Naim system that used a tubed amp - specifically A Zen SET amp. The website http://www.decware.com/tubes.htm says a lot about how fast these amps are and naturally I thought about Naim speed allied with triode midrange. BTW, this site also has a subwoofer that sounds like it might be a candidate for a pair of Kans. Again they talk about a speedy tight sound.

As I was looking for an amp I listen to various tubes. Never has the impression that they are slow.

The secret behint is quite easy - it has to match.

If the cap fits.

As my weapon I choose Cadwell Park. As my second I choose a rather pretty silver CBR600...
