About A Boy

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 10 April 2002

Just bought the Badly Drawn Boy soundtrack to the film above. Enjoying it a lot, it has some great songs and even the short instrumental sections seem to fit well.

Anyone else heard it yet?

I missed out on 'The Hour of Bewilderbeast', if this is of similar quality I may be buying it too.

Bought this yeaterday on Vinyl, not listened yet.

But 'The Hour of Bewilderbeast' is quite superb, and a must buy.

Don't bother! Get Nick Drake's back catalogue instead. Badly drawn boy is so derivative, in a Lloyd Webber sort of way!!

Listened to this now, Great stuff, well worth anyones hard earned £10, and miles better than Lambchops latest effort.

Of course anyone into this sort of thing should have all Nick Drakes albums, they are indispensible.

'derivative' what isn't???

Badly Drawn Boy is certainly not so similar to Nick Drake that anyone can say don't buy his stuff just get Nick Drake albums instead. Nick Drake wrote much more melancholic acoustic material (no bad thing. he was a master) than BDB's funky acoustic indie. You also have to see him live as well to fully appreciate his talent. Great entertainment/caberet.

if you like the style of badly drawn boy, then you should check out elliot smith. some people may know him as the guy who did much of the soundtrack for "good will hunting". very wistful, acoustic guitar music. check out "XO" or "figure 8". both great albums.

Sorry but he is nothing like Nick Drake! The new About a Boy OST is superb!

Woodface, I normally agree with your comments but I've got to say I think this album is piffle.

There really is no accounting for taste. If you are a Nick Drake fan then you will at least agree it is nothing like any of his output.

Sorry, does absolutely zero for me. Try before you buy.

I love the album (after only a few listens through I must confess). Whilst v. v. different to N Drake there are a couple of tracks with a Drakish feel on 'About A Boy'. Can't remember their names yet.

Good to hear a properly recorded version of the track 'Donna and Blitzen' too.

I think if you've head 'silent sigh' and like it (and any other BDB stuff you may have heard) then you will love the album. If you don't and can't stand BDB then needless to say you will not like it.

I, for one, think it is superb

further to my earlier point listen to B d B's 'Stone on the Water' and then Nick Drake's 'Cello Song' and tell me they're nothing like each other!!
