We started off as a music band that dabbled in masturbation,
but we became a masturbation band that dabbled in music.

Didn't they do "cum on Eileen"?
Posted on: 25 March 2009 by Kevin-W
Oh arse! Just come out of hospital, think I'll have to re-admit myself now!
Just what the world needs right now, the very worst band of the 1980s regurgitating themselves.
Does anyone think Robert Elms will come out and do one of his hilariously pretentious introductions?

Nah, that was Poxy's Madnuts Grumblers. They were almost as shit as Spandau Ballet.

Hopefully this does not give Limahl a stupid idea. I was afraid of Duran Duran, I fear Spandau Ballet, but Kajagoogo would terrorize me for good! Eventually this will happen... (sigh)
This said, would someone be kind enough to genuinely explain to me why is Dexy's so much hatred ? Which circle of hell -- for G*d sake, burn it down! -- do I have to expect for listening to Searching for the Young Soul Rebels ?
Thanks
Maurice

At least I suspect that SB might do it without taking it too seriously.
My greatest fear would be all that faux-sincerity and over serious diva-ism that would be a Eurythmics reunion. Oh please God spare us that, at least!

Sorry Maurice, the 'Circle of Hell' was reserved for Kevin Rowland due to the 6 foot high posters for his solo album from the late 90's that I had to cycle past everyday to the way to work in West London. Here is a link to that thread, as I would not wish to post such a scary image again: Embarassing albums thread
It was also fuelled by the beverage listed there too.
I do think that to really dislike something, it has to have merit in some form. Something that is simple bland, and pointless, say 'Black Lace' can be ignored, whereas something that has a 'spark' can irritate far more. It can also go either way, as it does hit some reaction in the listener. So something that you actively dislike, could more easily be something that you could like, and indeed may become liked once the spark has been understood.
I hope that makes some sense, and does not bring the wrath of 'Black Lace' fans on the forum.
Please play 'Young Soul Rebels' without fear of 'The Spanish Inquisition', I will just keep my distance. Hopefully 'The Spanish Inquisition' are busy having 'several' reasons to keep track of Limahl.

Thank you Jamie. I see what you mean, I didn't know these images were so much advertised at the times, I believed it was just the album cover.
I wonder if some french members of the forum would share the same feeling, recollecting Michel Polnareff's Polnarevolution...

Indeed! Nice

I do agree. I hated The Cure for decades, mainly because I couldn't bear Robert Smith's voice. I forced myself to listen to the famed trilogy of Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography when it was re-released recently, and found these albums splendid, as they deserved.
But there may be other reasons: when you're in your teen years, you more than often belong to some 'tribe', and the genres of music you listen to is a code to obey. So at the time it's a good thing to actively dislike or criticize some bands (as it is for clothes, social attitudes, etc). Then later on you open up your mind a little bit!

I promise to listen to it tonight, especially for you

PS: According to a well-known online encyclopedia, I'm afraid Kevin Rowland would not go straight to the bottom of Hell but would stop at circle no. 7. As for people who liked wine -- most probably epicureanists --, fortunately they'd stop before at circle no. 6 (and I guess we'd meet there).

That ain't funky, it's just bourgeois
PS Met Limahl in my local about five years ago. Very nice chap as it happens. Makes a decent living on the 80s revival circuit.

First the bombs, then the credit crunch and just when you think it couldn't get worse - the return of 80s and SB were about as drab as it got (and that was very drab indeed) - I think I'll emigrate to somewhere warm - anybody know what Venus is like.

To Shy shy.
What about the smash follow up - 'Ooh to be ah'?
I can't say I was a big SB fan, but Through the BBarracades could have been a classic had it not be sung by than Tony Handleme bloke.
