AVG. 'Resident Shield'

Just downloaded the free version of AVG (b******s to Norton). Is 'Resident Shield' their way of saying Firewall???

I don't know AVG but I would doubt if "Resident Shield" meant Firewall. Typically Resident Shield is the piece of code that resides in memory and actively scans downloaded files or code that wants to run on your PC. The Firewall part is likely separate.

AVG is antivirus software. Not a firewall.
Zone Alarm may still offer a free firewall download to complement your AVG.

Yeah, I'll just switch to my Windows firewall. Is it me, or is Norton designed to be virtually ineradicable from your pc?

I took Norton back and received a full refund.
Isn't it removable from Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs?

Yeah, you would think so. Trying uninstalling the damn thing though. Like trying to get rid of a cockroach infestation.

For most real people in the real world, AVG is probably the best anti-virus software (Norton-McAfee which cost money cause huge problems - easy to sort out with reformat hard-disks etc etc ...).
AVG is often free, and can be updated manually/automatically blah blah.
Apart from Firewall in many versions of MS WinXP, ZoneAlarm free product is pretty good IN ADDITION to MS product/instead of it.
ZoneAlarm will switch-off XP Firewall on boot-up, so once your Win PC has booted, re-enable Win Firewall (easily managed via e.g. shortcuts on desk-top etc ...).
I can understand that people who are paid to say how great Norton/McAfee are feel that they are giving good advice. Unfortunately, they aren't.
As well as beta MS Antispyware, Spybot & Adaware seem to be best - and 'free' - crap-sorters still.
