Noisy volume wheel on AV2
Posted by: IWC Doppel on 29 May 2010
Gents,
I purchased a second hand AV2 a month or so ago. I have only recently set up the system to use it and I find the volume wheel clicks when the volume wheel is turned by hand.
I would guess the volume on an AV2 would be mostly remote driven and seems likely to be worn ?
Ay ideas

Mine does it too but i think they're click stops rather than any kind of problem as the wheel is also used for menu adjustments in combo with the facia buttons.

Hi
The rotary knob is not a potentiometer but a command wheel, possibly an opto-coupler.
As well as other functions it will instruct a volume resistor ladder and it's probably the ladder that is "ticking2 as it goes up and down. The first resistor ladder I ever came across was the 1985 Linn LK1 pre-amp and early versions especially had a very loud "tat tat tat".I don't know whether your AV2 is louder than it should be but it could ne normal. It would cost to sort out if it's a fault and may be worth putting up with.
The AV2 does have some foibles but it's still a very good processor.

I use the AV2 for Bluray and have this set up effectively as a six channel pre. For anyone who has not processed in a good Bluray player ( my player is a Denon 3800 and I have tried at home the A1UD ) then you will be surprised how good this is. A far better solution to HDMI and a processor like the AV888. The AV2 is better than my old AV8 that I had used to try the HDMI processors up against.
I am very happy with the sound just wasn't sure if there was a problem with my unit

If the encoder is causing the volume to not go up/down then it is faulty.
If the clicking is through the speakers, this is normal for the volume chip used in that product (as long as it's not painfully excessive...)

It's not excessive, so I guess it's normal inm that case ?

Can't say i've noticed that with mine but i had the latest update applied sometime ago - maybe it night be worth the IWC Doppel doing the same as it's cheap enough to do.
