Wall mounting Linn Katans or latest Kans in conjunctionb with a Linn Classik?

Posted by: Jaybar on 24 March 2002

I am thinking of creating a simple Bedroom System (second System) and will be plugging in my VCR/DVD combo into the classik. My BR layout will only permit wall mounting of speakers. Will either of these work nicely? If not, what else? I need small speakers. Thanks in advance.

I don't see why not. Linn makes what's called the Brakit for mounting Tukans, Kan3 and Katans to the wall. I'm using Tukans on SO wall brackets and they work very well.

Audiotech makes a wall bracket that would fit Tukans and Kan3's if your looking for an alternative to the Brakit.

Here's a picture of a pair of Tukans with a Brakit fitted:

It would be very difficult to use a bracket on Katans as their backs are very narrow. Also with Katans you need then about 3-6" away from the wall (depending on the room and tonal balance).

As well as having a narrow back, the base of a Katan has an unusual profile. I doubt you would find a wall bracket that would fit.

Having said all this, I would definitely recommend them over the Kan (I, II or III - in particular). If you want to get the best out of your bedroom system, then use Katans with the only feasible mount - a floor stand.

Is there any particular reason for wall brackets?

I borrowed a pair of Katans recently. I seem to remember there being a few pre-drilled holes on the back. Are these not for brackets ?

Due to different cicumstances also, i had to wall mount my Audience 40's. IMO they work great, but getting them setup right was a real pain, even now you have to be sitting in a certain position for them to sound at their best.

I preferred the Dyn sound to the Kan's, which I had also considered - the bracket costs the same for each, though many dealers stock the Linn one, but the Dyn one is a tad more tricky to get hold of. I do like a bit of bass to my music, which is probably why I preferred the Dyn's, but even as close as they are to the wall, I didn't feel I needed to use the bungs...they sounded great!!!

Thanks Andrew for your question. My reasons are:

1) Lots of custom built in bedroom furnature (bookcases, chest of drawers, dressers etc) that are archored to the walls and cannot be moved.

2) Cats that jump around and would knock the Katans Over (that is whay is my main system, I have Sonus Fabers which bolt to the stands. The SF stands weigh 70 lbs for the pair and have a low center of gravity). Katans on stands would be a disaster with the cats.

3) My lover would object to stand mounted speakers in the BR. Only wall mounts with concealed wiring would be ok.

Also, please keep in mind that current music in the BR consists of a "boombox", a Kariokee Machine and a mono TV set. My standards are not as high for the BR system then for the main Spectral/Linn/SF System. Any suggestions, Andrew or others?

Thanks,

Jay

Oh yes. At the Bristol Hi-Fi Show a company demonstrated its range of panel wall-mount loudspeakers with a Classik. It was one of the grooviest-sounding of systems at the show.

As well as being very musical, they had very good bass and sounded very open. They come in a large range of different sizes.

The company is named Gecko and their range of wall-mount loudspeakers is called Artcoustic. In the UK they're distributed by M&K, I'm not sure who the USA distributor is.

The Artcoustic website is http://www.artcoustic.com/ as you see they are very discrete, but they also sound good too. The website also gives a USA contact.

I hope they're what you need.

I pulled this from the Linn website, though I think it's missing the word "as".

"The Katan offers superior and accurate performance with Linn or other high performance component sound or multi-channel systems. The Katan can perform a freestanding bookshelf, wall mounted or stand mounted loudspeaker."

There is a Katan manual on the Linn website that can be downloaded in pdf format that also mentions using a bracket with the speaker.

The Katan is 'Brakit ready'. It uses only the vertical portion of the brakit.

Ah.... I see! I've just craned my neck around the back and seen the screw points on the Katans.

Silly me.

for a katan/Kan/Dynaudio and other dem experience.

My friend bought the katan and they sit on a Brakit without problems at his house.
