Honour

I often wonder at persons of honour that I meet and have had the fortune of knowing down through the years. I talk here of the "mensch" - good and decent people who live gently, with a high regard for others; and who make honest choices above almost every other possibility.

Is the practice of the honourable way a matter of nature in these people? Or is it purely and simply a matter of choice?

What is the inner life of these people? Do they tend not to have the impulses for bad or selfish behaviour that I experience every day? Or do they simply have more reign over their impulses?

I judge honour more than friendship itself. I have few friends but each and every one I would trust with my life.

Harsh but very true. Life can accept few passengers.

Don't paraphrase unless your life has been saved by a friend. Then you can judge.....

Knowing Mike, I would guess he has both saved other's lives.... and had his saved by others.

But I don't suppose he would tell you that himself

I suffered a serious accident 24 years ago and without the assistance of a friend I would be dead - no doubt.

The same friend tried to shaft me a few years later for £500.

Did I owe him as he thought I did enough to change the ante ?
