Your 3 rules for life

Posted by: Rasher on 19 October 2006

So what are the 3 main rules that you now live by, with the benefit of experience etc?

Mine are:
1) You can't switch off gravity.
2) Trust things even when you don't understand them. It isn't necessary to understand everything. If it works, you don't need to take it apart to find out why.
3) We are all the same, and we are all someones children.

Yours?

I suggest you leave the jam factory, your postings are becoming far too syruppy.

Mick,

You seem to have a lot in your life to be grateful for, so why pick fights on an internet forum. Being nice isn't being weak. Kindness comes from strength.

Your "Rules" for life 1& 3 are truly excellent. Bravo. But IMHO getting even is a waste of time. Nixon's comment was by doing that, you lower your self respect. With consequences to follow. Even the lowly can sometimes say things that ring true. It was not meant,BTW, as a comment on your post.

Sorry if this sounds too earnest or syruppy.

Regards,

BB

Rule 2 has served me well. You can put the boot in without hating, you think of it as "just business".

Dear Mick! [Smiley]!

Was that a sticky attampt at a pun? [Smiley]! Fredrik!

PS: I find that humour, even somewhat laboured humour, is infinitely preferable to being dour! Life goes better with a smile or a chawtle! Even if these are not the first things one might think natural in the circumstances!

1. Never spend all the money you earn
2. Do it, do it right, do it right now
3. You are not what you think are, but what you think, you are

Almost anything by Emerson, but just three? OK:

1) Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist.
2) To different minds, the same world is a hell, and a heaven.
3) Tomorrow will be like today. Life wastes itself whilst we are preparing to live.

Rock music has everything you need to navigate all this useless beauty:

1) short people got no reason to live

2) you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get what you need

3)whop bop a looma ba lam bam boom

Or as Alice Roosevelt is quoted as saying: 'If you can't say anything nice about someone, come right over here and sit next to me!'

My 3 are somewhat specific to a bitter situation I am in at the moment:

1) Never recommend Everest Home Improvements to undertake any task on your home or that of anyone you know (and like)
2) Learn your Statutory Rights inside out and backwards, and become familiar with the workings of the County Court - you'll need all that knowledge if you need to sue Everest Home Improvements after naively believing they might be remotely competent.
3) If you want an example of the finest customer service around, generally you need look no further than Naim Audio. If you want my opinion of where to find the worst customer service (that I have ever experienced) I suggest you look no further than Everest Home Improvements...

Thankfully it was only three rules!

Rasher - just stop paying your Gravity Bill - then it'll get turned off for you!

Cheers!

Rich.

Treat everybody as an individual and as a human being. Human relation is a difficult task compared to relation with God. (go figure)

Respect....they need to be earned, don't demand.

If you think you're great, there's someone greater than you and vice versa...be humble and be grateful.

Some of the bitter lessons I have learned:

1. People won't notice if you overpay them by $50,000, but will instantaneously complain about a $0.05 underpayment.

2. Shoes with layered leather soles will eventually start squeaking.

3. To get rid of a cockroach infestation, one or two cockroach baits won't do the trick, you need at least 20 to 30 for a three bedroom house.

Yo-yo Master has inspired the three lessons I have learned about shoes:

1) Spend twice as much and the shoes will last four times as long.

2) Buy spare laces when you buy the shoes.

3) Never try to break in steel-cap Dr Martins boots. They cannot be broken in and you will only suffer.

Very true, and quite a generalisable principle. For example, whenever there's a yo-yo craze, most people just buy yo-yos, but only the experienced stock up on strings as well, knowing that replacements won't be available until the next craze which could be years away.

Hi Mark!

Not wishing to hijack, but yes, I've been battling for nine months to get Everest to finish an installation at my rear porch.

I've had no real roof on said porch all the while and just empty promises from Everest.

My research on the 'net suggests shoddy, incomplete work by Everest followed by intransigent behaviour is not an isolated incident but depressingly frequent.

Anyway, time to resume normal programming...

Cheers!
