Uniti+Foobar knocking out internet connection

Posted by: Tom_W on 10 November 2009

Hi,
i'm having problems getting wireless streaming to work with my Uniti. Any help would be much appreciated!
My setup: PC running Windows 7 64bit connected with ethernet cable to wireless router. Foobar UPnp server streaming wirelessly to the Uniti.
Problem: If Uniti is on, and i boot up my PC, my computer drops its (previously fine) internet connection. I can get it back by uninstalling and reinstalling the network card in device manager, but if i reboot, it's gone again.
The 'network and sharing' page in Windows reports multiple networks when it can't connect. The Uniti is able to connect to the wireless network though. This suggests to me that the Uniti is somehow interferring with the network rather than joining it. Any ideas?
By the way, i did manage to get the Uniti to stream briefly when i first set it up.

Cheers
Tom

Check out if they are on the same subnet or on different subnets.

as well as the above:

-are you using static or dynamic address allocation?

-What happens if the PC is on (Uniti is switched off at rear) and then you turn the Uniti on?

-What IP address/mask/gateway/dns are both devices reporting when they are working independantly? (Uniti details can be found in Setup->Factory Settings->System Status)

-What IP address/mask/gateway/dns are both devices reporting when they are not working?

-Does this still happen if you power down all the devices, including router. Then power up router, Uniti then PC in sequence?

-What make/model Wireless router?

Ok then, thanks for your replies. I've had a look at the IP information, and tried the suggestions. Here is my information:

-are you using static or dynamic address allocation?
DCHP is enabled, and addresses are not static

-What happens if the PC is on (Uniti is switched off at rear) and then you turn the Uniti on?
The PC retains its connection to the router and internet, the Uniti connects to the network, and can see my media library (although is unable to open stream). N.b. in my network i can see

-What IP address/mask/gateway/dns are both devices reporting when they are working independantly? (Uniti details can be found in Setup->Factory Settings->System Status)

PC
IPv4 address: 192.168.1.65
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.254
DNS server: 192.168.1.254

Uniti
IPv4 address: 192.168.1.64
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.254
DNS server: 192.168.1.254

-What IP address/mask/gateway/dns are both devices reporting when they are not working?
When they are not working i.e. after rebooting PC, when it has dropped its connection, all settings are the same as above.

-Does this still happen if you power down all the devices, including router. Then power up router, Uniti then PC in sequence
Yes. The PC is not connected, and i need to disable/re-enable ethernet controller to get it to connect.

-What make/model Wireless router?
Thomson TG585v7

Any ideas?

EDIT
I've got it working!
I tried streaming with Windows media player to see if there was a problem with Foobar, and it worked. Foobar also now works and seems quicker to search my library as well.
Only issue is that the Uniti now sees two media libraries. Is this because there are two servers running? I can only see Foobar in my Windows 'Media Streaming Options'.

Anyhoo, great to have it working because obviously it's too much work to lift a CD into the tray Winker

Hmmm. IP Settings look ok.

I'm not fully convinced it's working properly yet. Killing a connection like that seems a little more nefarious than your solution. I can't see any reason, at present, why the Uniti would be causing an issue like this - unless there was a network conflict. The device act's as any other slave device in the wired/wireless domain.

The point at which i got it to work was when i selected the option To automatically allow all devices and computers to have access to your media in the Media Streaming Options. Am I right in assuming that this is applying the settings to Windows Media Player streaming? I don't want to use WMP because it doesn't support Flac (amongst other reasons).
I'm not getting any warning messages about IP conflicts.
Are there any settings in Foobar UPnP server i need to adjust?

You will see 2 lists if you have two UPnP servers pointing at the same library.

As far as I'm aware you can block just the Media Player server in the Media Streaming section in W7. I may be wrong though.

Foobar: If you're running hi-def above 44/16, you will have to set Foobar to transcode to 44/16 etc until 24/96 support is released

OK, i spoke too soon and the issue came back. I believe the issue may be related to Apple's Bonjour service: Multiple networks shown for one network card
I will do some more Googling and keep you posted

Ok then. I no longer have the 'multiple networks' issue which removed my internet connection. I stopped, and disabled the 'Bonjour' service in Windows Task Manager, and have had no issues since. All streaming is fine.
So to recap, this was NOT a Uniti, networking, or IP address issue; it was a software conflict. I believe Bonjour may be installed either as part of iTunes, or Adobe Creative Suite. See the link above, or google the issue to find plenty of other people with this issue. It can also occur with MS Vista.
Cheers for your suggestions
