Old Kit bag - Richard Thompson

Posted by: andy c on 19 August 2005

Hi,
As a result of JonR's recent visit and this being one of the LP's he brought with him, I've purchased the CD, and its a definate grower.

Being new to Thompson, I'm not sure what else to investigate, so what dou you suggest?

Andy

I would try "Mock Tudor" the album prior to "OKB" the opening three songs are staggering, but I'm a big RT fan so could be a little biased! It's difficult to recommend albums from such a large back catalogue spanning so many years, but MT (or "Mock Todger" as it's affectionately know as around here!) is a personal recent favourite. Check out Thompson's website for his own label live releases, he has a very good live "MT" period CD available.

Hi Andy;

If you like RT's 'electric' stuff (as in 'The Old Kit Bag) - you could work back to 'Mock Tudor' or 1991's 'Rumor (sic) and Sigh' which is probably my favourite RT album. Therein, you get a bit of everything - clever lyrics, disturbing songs, and some great electric and acoustic guitar playing.

Uneasy listening for sure.

You need to be sure that you like his stripped back 'acoustic-folk' side, before going for the latest 'Front Parlour Ballads' or the like.

I like 1996's 'You? Me? Us?' which is interesting, as it's a double CD - one electric - the other acoustic.

Going further back; 1982's 'Shoot Out The Lights' made with his then wife Linda, is a cracker.

Happy listening.

John.

Can I recommend "Shoot out the lights" as a suitable next purchase? "Mock Tudor" is a great album, but SOTL is perhaps THE RT album to own.

Saw RT last week at Edinburgh's Queen's Hall and was sadly a bit disappointed. I've seen him eight or so times before, but this time I felt the magic wasn't quite there. A radical view, as most of the audience lapped it up, but having seen him perhaps more than most, I expected a little more...

John, HtHF is a bit heavy going for a newbie to RT, IMHO.

Mock Tudor purchased and played - very good too - a little more 'instant' than the other RT Cd I have...
