NAS and UPnP media server software for Qute

Posted by: David on 18 November 2010

I just placed an order for a Qute, and now it is time to sort out storage while I wait for it to arrive.

I have been playing with Asset UpnP and Foobar as media servers running on a PC while determining whether to go down this path, and been happy with both.

I was about to buy a Netgear Ready NAS Duo with 2TB of storage, but saw a review from someone on Amazon who could not make it work with his Qute and replaced it with a QNAP TS-210.

What NAS's are people using with their Qute/Uniti's?

Also do you use the UPnP server provided with and running on the NAS or something running on another device (PC), if so what. I have been happy with Asset todate, but will not be able to run it on most NAS.

Thanks for input everyone.

Hi David,

looking into Naim tested NAS drives topic I see that RipNAS is among them - it can additionally run Asset, because it is WHS based system. I think that there is a version, which comes with pre-installed Asset server. Additionally you're getting ripping engine powered by dbpoweramp and advanced tagging features - everything in a fanless system. My dealer here demoes Qute + RipNAS and he highly recommended it to me, so I'll give it a try in the near future, too.

I am using ReadyNas with Uniti (not Qute)with no problems at all. I must say that in my set-up the two consistants are the Uniti and the NAS, everything else seems to be intermittent and flaky, but those two can usually be relied on.

Hi are you using the built in media server with the ReadyNAS

I just picked up an Acer EasyStore H340 Windows Home Server for £199

Amazing piece of kit at a shocking price.

Another vote for ReadyNas Duo, has worked without any problems for the last year with my Uniti using the built in media server - Twonky.

A maybe off thread question, for a simple soul.

Is for instance can the Acer Easystore mentioned above, be used as a "home" for iTunes to get it off the Mac.
Will it work in conjunction with a Mac for that matter. It only seems to mention the front USB port.
How would it connect to the rest of my "network" for the want of a better word.

I used the Ready NAS Duo with my Uniti and now with a Qute. Both work as advertised. Currently I only use the NAS for files I can't store on my Serve. *Used the built in media server .

David, I have just received a Qute and wireless streaming AIFF codec from iTunes on a iMac. Works fine, but thinking of trying this LaCie wirelesspace. http://www.lacie.com/uk/produc...roduct.htm?pid=11565
Hopefully do the following:
1. Ethernet to the Qute for audiostream
2. Wireless file management from iMac (in another room)
3. Faster music selection (this part is a bit slow at the mo)
4. Get out of iTunes, into FLAC to try 24 bit music

Mid-term consider UnitiServe

A windows home server works fine with a Mac - BUT needs a Windows PC (or Mac) on the network to set it up.

Basically it sits there on the network, stores all your tunes (and backs them up) and broadcasts them to any itunes device on the network - so when you open itunes on your mac, you see the the tracks on the server. It doesn't take itunes off the mac - the the storage.

It does a lot of other things too, but it's designed more for the Windows environment. ie it will turn on my windows pc make a back up of it and turn it back off.

My Buffalo LS-CHL Linkstation Live works really well with my system. It is quiet, small and seemed easy to set up. It passes the Naim NAS tool tests (or at least it does if you don't check it with the network and the PC super busy as I did the first time)

I believe the 'live' bit means it has a media server already installed so it could be used to run your Qute direct from the NAS without the PC switched on but I've been using Asset on my PC so far so cannot vouch for this.

My system is temporarily out of action due to some building work so I cannot check this easily I'm afraid!

Hmmm also considering

1. Vortexbox - currently testing on old Macbook
May buy VB Raid if it works well.
2. RipNAS - good spec - well regarded - don't know how well it will work with Uniti / Mac.
3. UnitiServe - looks lovely - wife says "How much..?!!" But if the UPnP server via DigiFi is as good as people say - may well be worth the peace of mind*
4. ReadyNas / Thecus - do I really want to fiddle with yet another half built UPnP server -probably not.
5. Continue with Mac to Unity with eyeconnect - life is too short.
6. Mac to Uniti via Halide Bridge (nDac later) -maybe certainly works well.

At present I'm fed up with UPnP..

PS> Linn seem to have improved their Mac to Ds streaming.

*Specially for David Dever -before he says I told you so.

Hello David

You should have no trouble using the Duo. I understand it was being used in the factory when the Qute was being produced. I use the NVX myself and it has performed 100% in delivering files to the Qute. There is a perfectly functioning UpnP server built in and an option to run a Twonky add-on should you wish; I use the built in server as is.

One word of caution, if the Duo has the same fan as the NVX it would need to be in a room other than your listening room, it's not bad in my office, but I wouldn't want it in the lounge.

Enjoy the Qute when it arrives, it's a great little box.

I have a QNAP NAS and the Twonkey media server works fine with Qute. As others have stated the ReadyNAS should work fine particularly if using Twonkey but also with the built in solution.

From my limited experience of the ReadyNAS I would say the QNAP interface and general functionality is far better than the ReadyNAS but of course it just depends what you want to do with the NAS.

Another vote for the ReadyNas Duo - I had no previous knowledge of Networking but found the PC/Unitiserve/ReadyNas Duo system very straightforward to set up and maintain (ie back up, automate daily shut downs/startups etc) and it has worked faultlessly from the start. I have no experience of any other NAS systems but am very happy to endorse the ReadyNas as a storage system.

(Also found a jump in sound quality going from 5e to 6a ethernet cables for which I will not offer any explanation/justification - it just is [to my ears!])
