Linn Kans & Walkman WMD6

Posted by: Larry on 03 September 2001

I've got a pair of walnut MkI Kans in the garage which can't be used because some inebriate cranked up the volume till they fried. (I bought them new many moons ago and the woodwork is in excellent condition)
Point is, at the time of damage Linn had just about flogged all the bass drivers they had so I gave up and got some SBL's. Anyway with all these Kan posts flying about I am desperate to hear them again!.
Can anyone help with replacement info?
Does anyone out there know someone who can service a Sony WMD6 (other than Sony that is). I had a bad experience with the official Sony Service Centre.
Thanks in advance,
Larry e

Larry,

I think the B110 bass driver units are back in production. Either contact Linn again or KEF (who make the units).

Larry,

What is the problem with the Sony. I've repaired loads of these in my time as a service engineer, and still service / run one myself. I have the service manual here, in paper and electronic format (PDF).

Also what problems did you experience with the service centre?

Andy.

The guy at the service centre could not understand why I had taken in for service cos it wasn't broke. It also cost a bit to do then, (6 years) so god knows how much it will be now. I think it needs a belt and clean

Larry,

The only belt, if I remember correctly, is the one that drives the counter.

The main drive to the capstan flywheel is direct from the motor, via a rubber 'tyre' moulded into the periphery of the flywheel. The feedback for the speed control is direct from the flywheel so unless motor drive is severely affected speed control is usually very good.

The flywheel can benefit from cleaning, and sometimes adjustment, otherwise they're fairly reliable. I've replaced one on my Walkman, due to wear, in the 14 years or so I've had it, it could probably do with some more attention at the moment, since it's not sounding it's best, but it's only used by my son now.

Doo you have a specific sonic fault. Head wear can cause frequency response problems, and there are a number of faults that can cause speed stability problems.

I've changed Dolby chips on mine that were causing a transient distortion, and power supply capacitors can degrade, causing an increase in noise. Shock damage can break the crystal reference, degrading speed stability severely.

If it sounds basically OK, I'll post some details on 'servicing' you could easily do yourself to keep it in tip-top condition (including some photo's), when I get a minute.

It's unfortunately difficult to find anyone serious enough to look at these units with the attention to detail you require, I'd never trust mine to anyone but me smile

Wilmslow Audio stock the current spec Kef B110, and you can buy it on line here Wilmslow Audio I received a email from a Kan user a while back who was using them as replacements for units he had fried in his, and he reckoned that they sounded fine.

Hi to all

This is my first post but I have to be honest and say that I have been reading the forum for a while now.

Larry

The KAN I's used the KEF B110 (SP1003) bass drivers and Scanspeak D2008 Tweeter. The later MkI's used the same drivers as the MKII's. i.e. KEF B110 (SP1057) Bass/Mid and Hiquphon D 20-LP-1 tweeter.

The B110 (SP1228) currently available is the B110 that was reworked for the BBC LS3/5a during 1987 by KEF as there were consistency problems with the (SP1003) neoprene surrounds in production. The (SP1228) is used in the 11 Ohm version of the LS3/5a that is currently in limited production. The electrical charateristics of these units are quite different to the other B110's and the crossovers will need to be adjusted for the new drivers. The cabinet volume is fine as the (SP1228) was reworked for the same size cabinet.

I have both the (SP1003) and (SP1228) versions of the B110 and can tell you that IMO the (SP1228) is a superior driver to the (SP1003) in all respects except that I think the SP1003 goes slightly lower in the bass!

KAN's are great speakers and I have learnt a lot about music from my pair.

Have fun

Hi, Andrew

Have you had any experience with Marantz portable cassettes? I have one that my son jammed all the keys in and now after sorting them it does some silly things when you do record and pause.

Pete,

Sorry, no specific experience, athough I'm sure I could do something if it was in front of me!

Hi,

I really should have another go at it my self, but its one of those things that you have to remove 6 million screws to get in side it, When my son jammed all the keys down he bent a small metal tab just slightly which caused the jam but I think he might of done something else as well. When you press play+record its o/k but if you press pause a large solonoid keeps firing (this is what let me know he had done something to it I heard a clicking) I suspect that it has something to do with shutting off at the end of the tape because the power goes on and off, I might dig it out and look at it some time.

Does anyone here power their Pro Walkman with a Naim Power Supply?
Posted on: 04 September 2001 by Andrew L. Weekes
I use a home-brew PSU, similar in concept and the Walkman does benefit from it, but the noise from it's internal supplies makes anything better than a SNAPS wasted, IMHO.

I've got a w_man pro (which incidently I haven't used in years, keep thinking I'll get it serviced but havne't got round to it.) Many moons ago I picked up a 2nd hand snaps that had been adjusted to give out 6v on one supply (for the w_man) and 24v on the other (for my 32.5). I stoppoed using it when the cap started to leak - it was an ancient bolt together version, serial no 126!

You can make a chiepie supply by buying a battery holder at Radio Shack (or equivalent).

I rigged one that holds four D-Cell batteries and I wired it straight in to the Walkman.

My walkman (not a pro) does not light up when run off batteries - I don't know if this accounts for some of the sonic gain, but the gains are there. Less 'noise', more slam, and better PRaT.

These days I either run it off of recharchable double AAs or just off the wall. Sounds better with the AAs but I usually don't bother.

Thanks for the advice, I'll probably get the drivers from Wilmslow Audio just as soon as you let me know how to get the old drivers out!o mad Thanks again.
