Gordon Brown and Democracy

Posted by: Henners on 16 September 2008

Its Xmas for all the political writers and pundits who surround the "westminster village". Apart from the particle physisists who are enjoying the fruits of their labour and premier league footballers who dont have to worry too much; joe public is watching the ever worsening economic scene and wondering what is going on.

We have been given, by the generous labour party, a new prime minister who was the chancellor of the exchequor. I remember good old gordon preaching about prudence and the golden rules and we have had the best 10 years of growth that this country has known for a decades.

Now he is prime minister, the golden rules have not been adhered to, as it has been revealed that in keeping with most of the population the government has borrowed extensively in order to keep themselves happy.

So what for democracy? Will we get another PM foisted upon us, does it really matter? because no one really knows whats going on and can do little about it anyway. Apparantly the global problem is causing us grief so why have politicians at all. They can not do anything except spout on about how bad things are. Instead we get useless things like ID cards , the olympics and Alistair Darling.

Who are they going to give us next, any suggestions? Like the next Manager at Newcastle, I dont hear a stampede of candidates for the job. Rather like the toon army the back bench lefty socialist labour back benchers carp on and on and ignore the possiblity that if they give us another free pm. the country will say "hang-on what about democray".

OH yes Id forgotten Politicians dont know anything about democrary, we vote them in because we have to and then they do whatever they want because in the future the political writers, Pundits and future MPs can look up to them and marvel at the great things thay have done, most of which joe public couldn't give a monkey about.

Interesting that Darling was roundly derided 2 weeks ago for his comment that the current economic situation was the worst for 60 years. Now the US financial system is in meltdown and the situation there is being compared to 1929.

Perhaps the movers and shakers of capitalism since 1979 should be taking a long hard look at themselves before anything else.
