Going from 72 to 102... Wow!

Posted by: Alco on 04 August 2003

Hi guys,

I'd like to share my enthousiasm now, after a week...
Last week, on Monday afternoon, I got a visit from forum-member Bas V. He took along his NAC102. He had it for sale on a Dutch HiFi-site, and he offered me his (mint) NAC102 for a very nice price, I just couldn't refuse.

Well, I'll try to make it a short story (not my specialty Big Grin )

Imho the upgrade going from a 72 to a 102 is bigger than going from my Nait-2 to a 72/180!

Sure, I hoped and also expected some kind of (small) improvement over the 72, but not this!

The fact that the 102 fits my 180 & CDX cosmetically is a nice bonus, and it's also a relief to be able to control the volume by remote again Smile

But the main thing I wasn't prepaired for, were the sonic improvements:

- low level detail.
(with the 102 it's a joy to listen to music late at night, at low listening levels. Not one minor detail slips away, and the music still has its body and drive)

- Dynamics!
(with the 102 the music is much more dynamic.
As if my speakers are bigger/or the NAP180 suddenly has more power on tap.)

- air/space (sorry for these 'round-earthy' kinda words, but the 102 plays music with more natural air/space. (hope I defined this the right way)

So, all in all, a well worth upgrade imho.

Btw Bas, tomorrow I'll be in Nijmegen in the afternoon. (on zomertour with a friend)
Do you have any CD-store reccomendations ? Roll Eyes

regards,
Alco

More detail, dynamics, air and space- agreed.

But IMO, no more music than the 72.

Enjoy the remote, though!

Get a hicap to power the 102 and you like it even more.... Mine is powered by a supercap which can provide the electrical supply for both audio and switching sections of the NAC102 via a SLIC cable. 102 VS. 72 There is No contest.

Having moved up this week from 32.5 to 102 I agree with all Alco says about the 102 - but it also seems loads louder - is that right or is it me imagining?

Jeremy
ps anyone know where I can get K phonos for the 102?

Hmm, I don't know about that...
With the 72 my volume was never any higher than 8/9 o' clock, and with the 102 it's just the same.
One note though... the remote!
I have to touch the volume-up by short pushes, only a fraction of a second. If I touch it for let's say only 1 second the volume immediately raises skyhigh! Eek

Hi Alco,

Great you like the 102 so much. I have always felt the same in the 72-102 contest...

There's one really great music store in the Netherlands: Kroese. It's in the centre of Nijmegen and lots of cd's are very cheap over there. Now if you would have a tt, you could come in my street and visit some record stores...

Enjoy!

Regards, Bas

A hi-cap does a perfect job......
Only go for a supercap if you intend to change
your pre later.....

I agree to the comments above add a Hi Cap PSU.

Also for a very small price for such a huge improvement add the new NAPSC PSU it will cost around £ 200.00 and you will be amazed at the difference.

no-one's mentioned input boards here, which also affect volume- I swapped the variable pot. boards on my 72 for line level straight through ones for volume and quality improvement, and cheaper than a 102!

I've always wondered by Alco didn't find the Nait2 - 72/180 jump a big deal. I found the jump from a Nait very worthwhile with my Kans. I don't have the variable boards, btw.

I still find the Nait-2 -> 72/180 not that big that it justifies the huge price difference.
On my previous speakers, Kan-1's, the difference was even smaller than on my current Diapason's. So, if VFM was a big issue I'd take a Nait-2 over a 72/180, no doubt.

I've been to Kroese. I really liked that store. The prices were indeed very low.
(didn't find anything to my liking though)

We also came across a vinyl store called 'Rob & Elly's vinyl archief' (Or something like that)
and another store around a corner with a few CD's and LP's, called Tinseltown, which reminded me of that great 80's popsong by The Blue Nile.
(kinda cheap looking shop with mostly rubbish though)

In the end it was way too hot to visit any shop really, so after walking (read: climbing) up and down a few streets in Nijmegen centre, we went back to the station, to visit Arnhem.
I remembered the station from about 15/16 years ago when I was with the royal Dutch airforce.
(ahum...dienstplichtig)

A bare 72 is not the most listenable preamp with most sources. I, too, would prefer a bare 102 to a bare 72.

The 72 needs a hicap to be heard in all its glory. An s'cap is even better. It looks like a 72/hi, bought used, is better than a 102, and cheaper as well.
