SBL or SL2

Posted by: FE on 15 December 2003

My system is Nap 135, Nac 52, CDX, XPS and SuperCap. Which one of the speakers is the best for my system? Or would Allea do better? Money is not the issue, but good sound is.

speakers are hard to recommend to anyone as there are so many factors involved -- mainly acoustics of your room.

however, with a system like that, which i enjoyed thoroughly when i last tried it with SBL's and cdsii -- i would be surprised if a pair of sbl's would not do it justice. given the trade-in price my dealer is offering for my sbl's, you should be able to get one "for a song" Big Grin Big Grin

let us know how you get on

enjoy

If "money is not the issue" I recommend you try a pair of SL2s. They are fantastic speakers (or as you might say : "farntarshtic shpeakersh"). SBL's are better value but SL2s are just better.

If money's no issue consider the NBL or DBL. The NBLs are a waaaay better than the SBLs or SL2s. SBLs are best for the money.

I am running NBLs with my XX2/LP12/52/135s. The NBLs are however very revealing and will show the limitations of your source. I play vinyl only so it's not an issue with me.

FE,

There are non-Naim speakers in the world you know.

Don't limit yourself.

Im VERY pleased with my SL2, had SBL before. Same family sound, different leagues.

Go for the SL2.

FE,

The SL2's are one of the best speakers you can buy and if you are prepared to hand over £5k for them you will be well rewarded. They have a wonderful sence of air and space and their timing is spot on. However the SBL's can't be ignored and are still a fine pair of speakers for the money.

If its absolute sound quality thats important to you then go for the SL2's. They will work extremely well with your system and are more than capable of showing any improvements in your CD and amp.

OK, I know you asked about speakers, but I guess someone has to suggest that if money is no object you should be looking at a CDS3 really.

CDS3 with SBL's is probably preferable to CDX/XPS with NBL's/SL2's.

At the end of the day though SBL, SL2, NBL and plenty of other speakers will work well with your system. It's down to which works best in your room and which YOU prefer.

and don't forget the 552/500!

Whichever one sounds best to you, is the best in your system.

FE,

Greeny has got it right, far better to improve your front end and get a pair of SBLs than just get SL2s or NBLs. For the same price of the SL2s you could get a CDS3 head unit and a pair of SBLs which in my opinion is a much better buy.

Sean.

P.S. there is a pair of NBLs 2nd hand on Pink Fish Media at the moment if you are interested.

Why not consider a s/h pair of SBL's then take them active with a SNAXO and another pair of 135's. You could also upgrade your CD source - CDS2 / XPS2 / CDS3 etc....

If money if no problem, NBL, other wise SBL.

Thanks for responding on my ?. Have found out that there is a pair of SL2 hooked on a Naim system not far away from where I live. They are quite new, so in a month time I will go there for a listen. The suggestion to go active is interesting, so this I will think deeply about. Promise to tell You how I end up and how it sounds.

FE,
I can't give you any advices re SBL or SL2, but I do agree that you should maybe upgrade your source first.
If not a CDS3. a s/h CDS2 head shouldn't be too much money, and your 52/135s combo really deserve it, IMHO.

my 2 cents

FE, what speakers are you currently using?

In my experience, the SL2 is better than the SBL but for my money, wasn't worth spending the extra as I had SBL's at the time.

I now have NBL's and am very happy :-)

If you currently have lesser speakers, you will probably be happy with SBL's assuming you can find some suitable ones, otherwise, Sl2's probably won't disapoint you.

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

I'm currenly using AudioVector M3 Signature. They sound good, but if I can find an even better speaker, I will go for it.

My advice is go for the CDS3/XPS2 and trade in your old XPS. If you go for the SL2's they will really show up the limitations of the CDX/XPS.

I know this from personal experience...!

Then when funds permit-upgrade to SL2's, they are really good at showing the system at its best, but on the negative side any system inbalances. i.e. Source Componants...
