How easy is it to find out where someone lives?

Posted by: Diccus62 on 02 December 2006

I have previously posted:-

We have had problems with an individual stalking us in the past. This individual is very determined and bides his time and his actions are very measured and knows he can cause distress.

We are about to move back into our house which has had extensive renovations. We have a fairly large garden that we have now had fenced off (6ft high) with a 6ft gate half way down the side. The gate has a latch to open from inside and out. As minimum security we have a bolt on the bottom of the gate to stop people wandering in. There is a gap under the gate, where if you were really bothered could reach under and pull back the bolt and get in. Our fence is adjacent to a secluded path so it would be easy to get in the garden without anyone seeing, particularly after dark.

This week we have noticed during the day on 4 occasions that the bolt was pulled back leaving the gate easy to open. We have had workmen in all week and guessed they had left it open for colleagues to come in. We quizzed them all and this was not the case. Yesterday when it had happened again we tied some used electric cable (not attached to the mains Winker) which pretty well secured it. We thought nothing more, until this morning................... The cable had been loosened and the bolt pulled back. We are convinced our stalker is back. There are many stories I could tell you of previous incidents (which ended up in Crown Court) and garden visits is high up on his M.O. Nothing is stolen on these visits, and currently nothing appears to be disturbed. We have discounted teenagers who might want to come in and drink, smoke dope or have sex as there are other gardens with much easier access.

The stalker lives about 50 minutes drive away (at 3am) and is very determined and measured in his actions. I have worked in criminal justice as has my wife so we know about the characteristics of dangerous people. He is dangerous, but also clever. He is/was a cop who used to work in surveillance. He knows how it all works - or thinks he does.

My question - How easy is it to find out where someone lives with only there names, dates of birth, city of residence and car's registration details and probably a lot more personal information.

He has intruded in our lives for too long and it particularly unnerves my wife (who is the target). This is particularly relevant as he has left weapons on show in places he knows my wife would find them (tho this was 4 years ago)

Any thoughts

Regards

Tell the police immediately, if you haven't already done so.

Police are always informed if there is any new activity (the last was 11 months ago). Unfortunately there is no evidence. We make sure the Police log it tho.

Diccus, I, probably like many others would find this post very uncomfortable.

I really feel for your situation, but I guess at heart you know you are sort of in a unique position. I really hope you get it sorted but I wonder what you hope to achieve by finding this persons addy?

'Sending round the boys' and everything below that option is most likely to make someone who is already un-hinged even worse. Perhaps its time to get all this info down, including history and get down to the police station or CA?

Sorry to be no more help.

sending the boys round would make matters worse and is a criminal act in itself.

We know where he lives, we just wondered how he found out where we live.

History is pretty well logged on Police national computer.

Thanks for your interest.

The Electoral Register is available in every library! Have you considered Covert CCTV?

After my quite measured pre amble about our stalker we are not convinced it was him. This gives us a huge sigh of relief.

We reported it to the Police earlier and were informed that he house behind us was burgled last night. This would make the gate bold being pulled back on numerous occasions more likely. If it was professional burglars, they are likely to have sussed the neighbourhood over a few days. Hidden behind our large fence they could quietly garden hop and check other properties. Thankfully there is nothing in our house at the moment to steal otherwise we may well have been the victims. After our neighbours burglary two men were seen running away. What better place to hide until the heat dies down than a garden with a high fence and a gate bolted from the inside......... Makes sense even to us paranoid stress heads.

Rest easy men................... but i'll check the bolts in the morning. Sorry, there is now two bolts with padlocks on them and anti burglar paint dotted around the place.

Better safe than sorry.

Tomorrow if there is anything suspicious i'm digging a Moat Big Grin

Yeah we were going to have cctv fitted as part of the rewire on the extension, but was dropped because of cost and because everything had quietened down. We may well look at that again.

We put our names on the electoral register but ticked the box saying we didn't want them published. I'll recheck it tho, thanks

Just checked the electoral role online search - there is a charge. I'm logged but at an old address. My wife doesn't appear which is good. Interestingly found my father in law and his telephone number.

Have you considered Covert CCTV?

Motion sensitive lighting at least?
An unfriendly dog?
A court injunction to keep him a certain distance from your family and property?
Seems there would be some way to deter this individual. Pictures of him on your property would cause no end of difficulty for him in court.
AT THE VERY LEAST it seems you would want to keep the neighborhood robbers from using your garden as their "Grand Central Station".
Good luck with this, it is more complicated than what I've read, I'm sure.

The garden was secure last night which is a relief. The deterrents I've put in place will hopefully send the burglars to other addresses. As for motion sensitive lighting, thats a good idea. The dog would have to be soft and kid loving, so clearly not a deterrent.

Yeah it is more complicated than i've posted but we're convinced we were used as Grand Central this week and it wasn't our stalker which is a HUGE relief.

Grand Central is now closed. The burglars have left the garden.

Cheers

I hope you and your family have not been impacted by the mud slides.
Posted on: 03 December 2006 by acad tsunami
Derek,

That's very kind of you, thanks. As I have said elsewhere on this forum most mudslides occur after illegal logging has denuded the hillsides. The local officials are bribed to turn a blind eye and as is usual out here the very poorest gets to pay the ultimate price.

Diccus,

Sorry to hear of your situation. Just a thought re what you said above - if he was a serving police officer, as you alleged earlier, isn't it possible he found out you or your wife's car registration number and got an ex-colleague to check it out on the Police National Computer?

He knows my wife and my registrations anyway. Whether he still has any friends still in the force I'm not aware. If he does PNC is a likely source, not that i would suggest that a serving officer would do such a thing Winker

sorry about your'e problem, but it appears quite easy for those in the know or who take the time to find out.i have friends who recently moved eighty miles after a low level dispute with a neigbour.they have now moved to Australia after the disagreement followed them.i'm shure they will enjoy life there but neither move was planned.they tried various things to solve this minor dispute, but at the end of the day they took the only(mainly because of the children)option they fely was open to them.
lodge complaint with police, solicitor ,council ect.try to publicise the fact you have done so.

It is frightful that one person (or a group) can cause so much distress that your friends moved to Oz.

When we took our Stalker to court we did him on stalking and harassment laws which are relatively new. Basically if you tell someone you don't want contact with them and they keep pestering you (by text, email, phone calls, in person) they can be in theory arrested. He was found guilty in Magistrates, but not guilty in Crown. If he'd have been found guilty in Crown he would have been sacked. The Judge thought he was an upstanding citizen who had done no wrong. Bless.

A little while back well after the case my wife's car ground to a halt having leaked brake fluid. Two AA mechanics noted that the brake fluid plug/screw inside the engine had been loosened causing this leak. They said there was no reason to ever loosen this screw. Now I'm no mechanic but it is stuff like this that scares us (particularly my wife, as it's her that is targeted). His MO is also tampering with her car.

Diccus,

I'm suprised this bloke has got the nerve to stalk you, given your size! Must be a complete nutter! Sorry to hear that your missus is the target, no fun for either of you. Hope that it gets resolved quickly so that you can enjoy your refurbished home in peace (depending on dial position Big Grin ).

i second the security lighting system
" gjd = 2 zone = solitaire "
ive one of these fitted " after having a car stripped on the drive " . you have a sensor mounted away from the halogen light
when sensor is activated light can come on or stay off
but the keypad inside beeps with every movement
as there are two zones the beeps are different so as to alert you as to where they are around your property
i believe a 4 zone is also available

our sensors alerted us to car thieves the other month when lights came on , they tried one over road, we alerted police, they were caught running away. but alas it looks like they'l get off

for peace of mind id install one , i think mine cost circa £250 about 2 years ago
local city electrical factors stock them.
theres a few round durham area
