speaker pop from tumble dryer

Posted by: ARC on 16 May 2003

I'm getting a pop through my speakers when my tumble dryer changes direction (the drum not the dryer!). Bearing in ming the hi-fi and drier are on different floors of the house is this air borne RF interference? If so can I stop it in any way?

This is a fact of domestic life I am afraid. Its likely the tumbly is on the same spur.

The way around this is to get a seperate spur just for the hifi, this may or may not cure the problem, but aside from this its rare to find a cure.

I get it something terrible with the fridge.

Some people complain of PC interference, I can't say I have noticed that.

I have the stereo, TV, computer, Fridge, Microwave and kettle going through the same ring, suffice to say it can be a bit noisy.

I have a seperate spur for my set-up but still suffer some pops and clicks mainly from mains switched lights within the same room.
The noises must be radio wave interference and also vary dependent on ambient temperature and the time of day. I believe that electric supply HZ varies on local/national load and varies between 50 & 60 cycles - this must have an effect however well your internal wiring is configured
It is frustrating and as you say it is a domestic life trade off.

All these components and more are available from Maplin at a fraction of the price!

I paid <£5 for my electronic starter and I think my VDRs I used in something I made once were 69p. Never used a contact suppressor for anything so I'm not sure of the price but less than four quid I'm sure Red Face)

Not trying to do the guy out of business - kimber kable rocks (outside a naim system) and the silencers are groovy too.

Strange isn't it... you can't gas yourself, but it's still perfectly leagal to electrocute yourself! Red FaceP

The mains where I live is beyond help sadly. With a telephone exchange down the road and a load of dodgey student TVs I've just given up!

What's involved with getting a 415V 3-phase supply in the UK? Remembering my student days with bands wiring different phases to sound and light supplies was the norm.

In the US we get 2 phases for free!! Putting the amps on the opposite phase as the high current switching appliances almost eliminates interference (I think 3 -phase should be better). Unfortunately a separate mains spur won't provide much reduction in mains induced RFI.

Why listen when the dryer is on?
Why not shut it off while you listen?

Sounds like the easiest and cheapest solution?
