rgb via bnc connections on n-vi
Posted by: john R1 on 21 April 2007
was browsing through the n-vi manual, and i read naim recomend rgb via bnc as the next best connection after the dvi,if i select this on the options i get a pink screen, is this right, also had the latest firmware and software updates done today, up to now all seems fine, will post if i get any problems,

Sounds like you have not set the screen or n-Vi to RGB mode (its probably still in comp/YPbPr mode). you must set screen to the same as the n-Vi (i.e. RGB->RGB or YPbPr->YPbPr)
Note:- RGB is Macrovision copy protected on CSS encrypted discs (i.e. prerecorded DVD)

munch and AV@naim, thanks for the replys, can see what you are saying, so have got to set my input on plasma to rgb as well as n-vi, will i get a better picture through rgb or will i not notice any differance.

Well, technically...
RGB is better, as you get full bandwidth up each cable core.
YPbPr has to "make" green:-
Y = luminance(brightness).
Pb = difference between blue and luminance (B - Y).
Pr = difference between red and luminance (R - Y).
But, to be honest, on some setups YPbPr is practically indistiguishable from RGB
(I am sure to get slated for saying that now...)
I reiterate the fact that RGB is copy protected, so if you are using CSS encrypted discs, you may get no picture via RGB.

AV@naim, set up n-vi to out-put rgb, set up plasma to accept rgb, screen looked very green, think i will stick with the YPbPr connection, thanks anyway.

forgot to ask what are CSS encrypted discs ?

It's Macrovision protection. It's basically on about 95% of all commercial DVDs you can buy.
So, RGB is a very good output, but in reality as DVDs have CSS on them, then you can only use YPbPr.
I opted to use the DVI output instead.
Roy.

Sounds like you've got it the wrong way, the other way now.
Usually if you set:-
-player to YPbPr and screen to RGB you get green
-player to RGB, but screen to YPbPr, you get pink
Did you ok the RGB settings, before leaving the menu's?
-CSS = Content Scrambling System, DVD's "protection". If the player detects a disc with CSS on it, it will turn on the Macrovision CP on the RGB output

AV@naim, am going to stick with the ypbpr connection, if and when i change my plasma will try the DVI output, thanks anyway.

The component YPbPr output on the n-Vi (and DVD5) is extremely good. Don't naturally assume that the digital output will be better. On my Fujitsu the component picture is preferable to the DVI input when using either a DVD5 or n-Vi (This may depend on the quality of the component lead - I am using the Naim BNC-BNC lead, which is the best I've come across). However, with lesser players, it's the other way round....

Agree, for me too, component is better than DVI probably due to the distance from the DVD5 to the Runco projector, also using a 10meter Naim RGB1. On the 110'' screen, the component is more ''film like'', the DVI is over-sharpened.
One thing i have noticed: the image is cleaner if all 5 BNCs are pluged on both ends (if such a connection exists), even if only 3 are active. A better ground? a better impedance match for the cable? anyway it works for Runco plasma and projectors and with other cables too.
