E-mail notification of responses

Posted by: Tom E. on 05 March 2009

Now, a way to waste even MORE time on the forum. I just joined a forum that gives me the option of recieving an e-mail whenever a response is posted to a topic that I started. It includes a link to take me directly to the forum and the response. Is that cool or what!

what.

Some might call that spam.
Posted on: 05 March 2009 by Mickyblueyes
No not really.

I am a member of half a dozen or more web forums and this one is the only one which does not give the option to have e-mail notification of replies to a topic, regardless of whether I started it or not.

I must admit I think it is a glaring omission in this day and age.

Anyone using blackberry for this, so that you are not even tied to the house?

Of course I'm not joking, the e-mail notification lets me know a response has been made to my post. You can choose to ignore it, or open it and read it. Seems perfectly reasonable.

Glad you added the question mark, George. I was afraid you had turned into a techno-freak!

Yes, honestly Adam, it's quite common. Whether we want it here is another matter. If I want to know if anyone has contributed to my thread, I have a look.

Agreed. Also helps with senior moments when you don't remember what thread you're conversing in the day before.

Dear Mo!

No chance of me ever doing this!

To answer Dave's point about the senior mement when you cannot remember what threads were being joined in with ... I have a "work-around!"

I go to a thread where I know I have posted, like my Polish Vodka thread, click on "GFFJ" and then click on "View recent posts!"

Then I know what offense I have caused in the recent past!

All the best from George

LOL..my crutch is "view recent posts" from my profile. Your's requires enough brain cells to remember *a* thread you've posted in;-)

Seriously though, email notification is the one feature I miss about the current forum build...my only complaint actually.

I think most forums have the option off as default, but at least they have the option to, and also to track topics when they end up miles down the forum lists.

Now just consider the waste of time of all the other forum members.

Participation is optional.

That type of facility is useful if you are posting a question to get help to resolve a problem, getting a notification saves you having to check in on the forum.

Derek, I agree, it seems to be a "no brainer" to me, not having much experience with forums.

I think some are missing the point here.

You do not have to receive e-mails if you don't want, but those who do... can.

This thread being 'moved forums' being a perfect example of the advantages of topic tracking.

Yes I found it, but had to go hunting for it.

An Epic Tale, no doubt.

"We have sailed many months, we have sailed many weeks,
(Four weeks to the month you may mark),
But never as yet ('tis your Captain who speaks)
Have we caught the least glimpse of a Snark!

"We have sailed many weeks, we have sailed many days,
(Seven days to the week I allow),
But a Snark, on the which we might lovingly gaze,
We have never beheld till now!

"Come, listen, my men, while I tell you again
The five unmistakable marks
By which you may know, wheresoever you go,
The warranted genuine Snarks.

"Let us take them in order. The first is the taste,
Which is meager and hollow, but crisp:
Like a coat that is rather too tight in the waist,
With a flavor of Will-o-the-wisp.

"Its habit of getting up late you'll agree
That it carries too far, when I say
That it frequently breakfasts at five-o'clock tea,
And dines on the following day.

"The third is its slowness in taking a jest.
Should you happen to venture on one,
It will sigh like a thing that is deeply distressed:
And it always looks grave at a pun.

"The fourth is its fondness for bathing-machines,
Which is constantly carries about,
And believes that they add to the beauty of scenes--
A sentiment open to doubt.

"The fifth is ambition. It next will be right
To describe each particular batch:
Distinguishing those that have feathers, and bite,
And those that have whiskers, and scratch.

"For, although common Snarks do no manner of harm,
Yet, I feel it my duty to say,
Some are Boojums--" The Bellman broke off in alarm,
For the Baker had fainted away.
