NAC52PS>SUPERCAP?

Posted by: Michael on 23 May 2001

My Nac 52 is powered by the original 52PS supplied, what are the benefits of upgrading to a Supercap and is there really such a big difference for the amount this would cost?

I understand there might be a second hand market for the 52PS as it can be used to power other Naim equipment (CD players???) ..maybe using a modified Burndy? Is this the case and what would be a reasonable price to expect to ask for it in order to trade up please? This would certainly be a big factor in offsetting the cost.

I appreciate that the only way to decide is to actually listen and make one's own mind up ...but others may have already done this and have valuable comments to make.

Thank you

The general jist I get is that upgrading to the Supercap would be the best move since inventing the wheel. Seriously I think it would be a good move to make if you can afford it, I too am unsure as to the value of the 52PS but I am sure someone will be able to help.

I suggest that you discuss this with your dealer or Naim directly. The 52 has gone through several upgrades over the years and not all of them are made known by Naim. I know that you can use the CDS1 power supply like a supercap via a modified Burndy cable. I have not heard that you can do this with a 52PS though. I also wouldn't assume that a Older NAC52 is compatable with a Supercap without first asking those who know.

Uh, no...the 52PS is plug-compatible with a modern NAC 52, and vice-versa with a SUPERCAP. At this rate, there are likely very few original 52PS units out in the field.

The CDPS doesn't even figure into the equation, as it has far fewer voltage rails.

After a demo at my local dealer I have decided to upgrade my 52PS to a supercap.

Thanks for the helpful info from contributions above.

I was amazed at the musicality and clarity of the 52 using the Supercap rather than my original 52PS.

For your information the current cost of the upgrade is £1148.

Thanks once again
