Do you like your Job.....???
Posted by: arf005 on 16 September 2005
A recent post by Fredrik H got me thinking.....
Do you like your job....???
As some of you may know I spend two weeks of every month out here......
....in the middle of the North Sea, well, it's further North than in the middle, and closer to mainland Norway than bonnie Scotland....
It also struck me recently - 13th September, that I have been working for this company for 12 years! Nine of which have been off-shore....
Now I know I am not the only one on this forum that works off-shore (how's the Dunlin treating you Ian...??) and I'm not looking for sympathy for being stuck on a rusty metal prison away from loved ones for two weeks every month working 12 hour shifts mainly on nights....
What I wanted to ask was if people actually LIKE their jobs.....
Sound daft...??
Probably, but I for one feel very lucky to be here indeed!!
Especially when I think back to my school years, where, due to a move from home town Edinburgh to Dundee at those awkward teenage years, falling into a 'different' (not necessarily wrong, although my mum may think otherwise) peer group, and coming away with little or no higher qualifications and no direction in life.....to finding myself working for a big company in an established industry with job and financial security.....then aye, I'm very lucky indeed.
I actually like the work cycle, and do not know how I would get anything done if I had a 'normal' 9-5 job with weekends and holidays.... Yes, being away from loved ones for two weeks can be hard, but it makes the two weeks at home feel even better!...even if it is over in a flash... Plus she gets peace and quiet for two weeks which goes down well....
Also, there is little or no job satisfaction these days, mainly due to lack of manning, the usual mismanagement and this place showing its age and years of neglect due to cost saving cuts....
Oh, and those concrete legs are a whole nasty thread topic in themselves....
A big understatement considering the tragic fatalities on the Brent Bravo....
But, having said all that, I think I do like my job!
And I feel very fortunate to be able to say that!
Besides, if it wasn't for my job, we wouldn't be living in the house we have, been half way round the globe on our honeymoon this year, or, more to the point, we woudln't even be considering buying any Naim!
Just thought I'd share my story.......so how about yourselves.....
Do you like your Job.....or is it a means to an end....???
Cheers,
Ali

Dear Ali, and Friends,
Still on 2 till 10 (pm), but we have over-produced on the Conserve, thanks to the lack of inteligence in planning! So now I am churning out flat-roll icing for Celebration Cakes. Football Cakes and Me To You things. I would not eat one. Not because there is anything wrong with them, but they are rather heavy and the icing does not tatse nice to me. I have lost one of my Poles, who I trained too well. But the other one is a character. Quite mad, so we get on brilliantly, though I feel sorry for any agency we get given. Work can be rather boring unless you press on. Unfortunately, this evening, and the first time on this horrible icing, my co-worker descided that we ought to do another batch. Well what can you do with that sort of enthusiasm. Go along with it I suppose, so we did and I had the upaid and thankless task of sanitizing the plant after closing time! I would prefer that attitude to the one where someone is always asking what the time is. Waiting for the end tends to make the end seem a long way off!

You obviously didn't give the idiot permission to post your private communications with the Naim forum.
Do we have a lawyer on board who could perhaps confirm this for future reference?
Thanks Nime,
The same control room operator was working with me again on days this trip.....
I didn't (and neither did he) mention last trip's incident for a couple of reasons - didn't want him to know it got to me, and didn't want to admit it got to me that much!
I think I was a bit more sensitive than usual last trip, for whatever reason I'm not sure - working nights for 2 weeks can do all sorts of things to mind and body.......
But hey, water off a ducks back as they say, besides, like Adam points out this is a 'public' forum so I couldn't exactly complain about invasion of privacy could I.....
Cheers,
Ali

How unexpected.

I was going to ask if the reference to "The Village" had anything to do with the blind leading the blind? But decided not to on the grounds of appearing predictable. So, thank goodness I didn't. My reputation remains intact! Ever onwards!

Dear Adam,
You know that I could take that as a compliment. I like to be thought of as consistent and predictable! I like it in others too! Was it a compliment, by intention?
All the best from Fredrik.

I think you will find he is the only Barrack Room Lawyer in the village.

My dad had similar treatment from the Midland Bank in the 80s (worked there since the 50s). Listening Bank my arse - more like slavedriving personality and soul destroying tossers. I boycott HSBC/First Direct on general principle now. I'd not mind betting at least some of the reason he's succombing to terminal cancer wasn't down to them making him feel low and unappreciated for 30 years...
As for me, my job sucks, but the pay is OK, the pension is OK, and aside from the noisy induhviduals and cow-orkers I'm surrounded by, is generally not so bad. I'd prefer less "ass on seat spent at computer" time and more "people-focused" work, but it's not that bad. Also, a regular drip feed of work rather than fits and starts would be cool.
As for oilrigs and ships - I'd love to work at sea; I've always liked being on large ships.

Sorry to hear about your Father's similar treatment Dom.....
As for working on oil rigs and ships......still fancy it around this time of year......
Working nights and not seeing daylight for 2 weeks can be a bit depressing, plus the weather gets a bit wild this time of year!!
Here's a famous/well used pic of the Brent Charlie during a storm a few years back....
And as for the supply ships - respect goes to those guys!! Month at a time in weather like this.......no thanks!!
But you also get nice sunrises like this......
Beautiful clear days like this......oooops!
Sunsets like this........
Or ominous looking mornings like this one.......
Anyhoo, back to making the most of my time off - decorating........ho hum.....
Cheers,
Ali

Nice pics - wouldn't like to be on the supply ship.
Reminds me of talking to some French Navy types after cyclone Dina - they had ridden the storm out and were facing a swell of 90ft at it's very worst. I had them repeat the size of the swell they encountered several times because I was so incredulous.

FINALLY......reached the end of this trip - our annual shutdown, that must go down as the worst in history!!
Took us almost a week to get a full hydrocarbon isolation on the drains system.....
We are not like most platforms as even though we are shutdown we still have most of the oil in the north sea (North East of Shetland anyway) flowing through us to Sullom Voe. Turned out there was a passing v/v (not uncommon) on a drain line from such a 'live' system. Pumped the valve full of sealant and got ourselves an isolation.......aye, then the service water tank down one of the legs decided to spring a leak!!
There was already a temp repair on the tank, which in a moment of great timing decided to give way just as we managed to get somewhere with our shutdown....typical Cormorant Alpha I suppose!!
So, while you were all enjoying yourselves over the weekend listening to music, drinking beer/wine etc etc, I was stuck down the leg working with the welder, and fire watchers, sticking a big plate of metal on the side of the tank......
Loads more crap I could go on and on about but hey, I'm only moaning and probably nobody's listening.....
Home tomorrow, weather permitting.....do you believe we (and the rest of the uk) have got feckin' FOG in November!!!
Oh, and home for six weeks off, come back to this rust bucket on 3rd of January......Chrimbo and New Year at home!! Hey, I worked both last year......
Can't wait!!
Do I still love my job - I'll tell you tomorrow if I make it home......
Cheers,
Ali

Just back from a wee trip back home...East coast of Scotland and after a couple of nights of -6 am happy to be back to nights of +12 over here in the South East of Spain! The big difference though is the summer and enjoying days in the high 30s whereas Scotland...errr...dont really have a summer at all
Same game, oil, has paid for my wee pad out here along with my Naim amps but after spending a year working on a frac boat in the North sea, mostly in the Norwegian sector, managed to pick up international work and have wandered the globe for various periods at a time for the last 12 years. Shortest trip 1 day, longest trip 11 months! Best rotation has to be 5 weeks on, 5 weeks off but the best rotation which paid well has to be 7 weeks on, 3 weeks off! Thatll do for me
All that said, Im looking for work again at the moment though it is on the back of a year off after a particularly lucrative few months in South East Asia. Work to live, not the other way round!
Posted on: 21 November 2005 by arf005
Nice one Merto,
although I don't fancy 7 on 3 off.....
Like I've said before in this thread - I feel really lucky to be with a big company in a stable job, yeah I moan about it but to be honest I am very grateful. Fixed leave pattern of 2 on 2 off, then every four trips I miss one so get 6 off every four months – like I said, I feel lucky!!
Got to agree with you though – work to live not the other way round!!!!
Cheers,
Ali

Stability of the position you currently occupy may allow for further NAIM upgrades
.

Well Darth, we'd have to have some Naim in the first place for that.......
But yeah, if I wasn't in my current employment then we'd probably not be considering any Naim at all, or if we were it'd probably be CD5i/Nait5i.....not CDX2/202/200......
So, how's the dark side treating you these days....???
Cheers,
Ali
