AV2 rear channel

Posted by: thomas schiller on 14 August 2002

I have some questions about the additional rear channel of the AV2:

a) is the signal mono or stereo? Theoretical it has to be mono, but in the manual the rear output is specified with ch1 and ch2.
b) should I use two loudspeakers for this channel in any case?
c) where should I set up these loudspeakers - between the normal surrounds like a pair of center - or on the left and right side wall between front and surround speakers?

Are there any experiences of AV2 users to this topic or does an official opinion of NAIM exist?

Thanks for your comments, Schiller

In the AV2, rear channels are independant, 2 separate channels. But in DTS ES and DD EX, the rear channel is mono. So the AV2 will route this signal to CH1 and CH2. If a new standard comes out with stereo rears, a software upgrade will be released and uploaded in the AV2.
In the AV2 menu, you can specify you have 1 or 2 rear speakers.
As its name implies, it (they) must be placed at the rear, behind you, Surround on the sides.
For more info on system setup, go to the Dolby labs (Dolby.com) web site.

Emmanuel, thank you for your competent answer!

I have some further questions:
How does the sound of 5.1 compares to DD EX/DTS ES with the AV2? Is it worth the additional costs of amplifier and LS?
Is DTS discrete ES a further improvement of sound quality to DTS ES?
By the way: does the AV2 have DTS discrete ES or only DTS ES software?
