52 volume

Posted by: Not For Me on 19 July 2002

My 52 hs stopped responding to the remote control on volume, nothing else.

I have pulled the knob out and lossened it, which normally does the trick, but no joy this time.

Any other ideas ?

Or is it time to go back to the factory ?

Have you tried a new battery in the remote?

Switch off the 52/Supercap (or /52PS) for a couple of mins.

Find an other remote and try it on your 52. If the problem is still there, send it to Naim, an optocoupling device is dead.

I took the case off, removed the volume knob and twiddled the potentiometer shaft around a bit - that seems to have solved it now.

My newish 52 does this from time to time (with two remotes).

I can get it going again by hitting 'pre-amp' and 'CD' on the remote a couple of times.

David,

this problem also occurs on my 82 from time to time. Then I solve it like Martin proposes, which worked out each time.
Cheers

David, Christian,
How old are your preamps?

Manu,

mine is still on warranty, another 18 months from now on. I'm very sure that the problem is caused by the remote control and not by the preamp itself.

Mine went down about 4 years ago and Naim cured it by fitting the pots board upgrade which gave significant sonic improvements for £170. Not sure when this was introduced (must be between 1994-8) and whether your has this

My 52 is an early vintage - 1991

I will try a new battery - but the balance control works fine when the volume shuts down.

I don't know why Naim bother with a balance control - Who ever uses it ?
