HiCap - pure genius/thanks/hissing noise

Posted by: Kevin-W on 26 November 2002

Well chaps, took all your advice and borrowed a HiCap. Wired it up to my 62/160, revved up the LP12 and... WOW!
I was blown away, had to hhave one. My local dealer had an ex-dem HiCap (less than 2 years old), boxed/mint for a good price so I snaffled it up, along with a black SNAIC.
Having lived with it for a few days, I have to say that adding the HiCap to the 62/160 was as big an upgrade (if not bigger) than moving ffrom a Nait 2 to the 62/160. Music has just become so much more enjoyable and involving!
Thanks to everyone who recommended the HiCap route to upgrading!
If anyone out there is thinking of an upgrade, I can't recommend getting a HiCap enough.
One query though. When the system's not playing music I can hear a loud hissing through one channel (the right). You can hear it even when the mute button iis engaged (and no matter what input is selected). t doesn't interfere with my enjoyment of music, I'm just puzzled/concerned. Anyone know what's going on?
Cheers

I've read the other thread and I understand - I have very sensitive speakers (old HB1s). But why's it coming out of one channel only? Is it purely down to the positioning of the gear (all my racks are to the right of the right speaker (if you know what I mean).

Are both runs of your speaker cable equal in length?

Cheers,

Edo (wild guess)

Are both tweeters working wink

A.

In reply to your questions:

Andrew - as far as I'm aware, both tweeters are working fine. When I get home I'll double-check though.

Alan - I agree, the level of hiss has not thus far interfered with my musical enjoyment. Interestingly, I've noticed ever since I've had the 62/160 that the right is the more "dominant" channel.

Ahhh, it's nice to hear that a few of you are still using the original Heybrook HB1s.
I got mine in '84 and I have to say that although not to everybody's taste, they can really sing (even in my current 'modest system' comprising Xerxes/Artemiz/Nad 3020A(!)/HB1s)

Incidentally, if you're wondering why I'm on the Naim forum when I have no Naim - I used to own a 62/90/Kans (for a year or so) but then discovered DJing and suddenly the HB1s seemed to make more sense - I bought them back!... The 62/90 had to go to fund some Technics 1210s!! roll eyes
Anyway, now a few years on, the 3020A is beginning to fall apart (literally!) - time for an upgrade me thinks!!

Apologies for the rant - I just had to get that off my chest.

I agree - they're ace speakers. I've had mine 18 years and they've lasted me through countless amp/source upgrades.

I listen to a lot of funk, soul and rock and they sing beautifully - dead easy to drive too.

I can't see myself getting rid of them ever - and I probably won't upgrade 'em until I've got the LP12 lingoe'd and upgrade my amps a bit more.

Kevin

Anyone else got any kit they're inordinately attached to? (All very innocent of course)

Alan Ball, the mute button on the '82 does indeed cut the hiss. It is the main reason that I bought the '82 over the '102. I have a CDX-82-180 and JM Lab 915 speakers, the hiss that comes out of the speakers when the music is at a quiet spell or not on is quite loud, the system is on a 5 tier Naim frame and i am currently listening to a pair of 135's on demo. While I am not convinced about the 135's could any-one suggest a logical upgrade as it is my first Naim system and want to try to avoid buying only to replace it and lose out financially cheer's ( I have NAC 05 cable and a black snaic.

Dealers everywhere must laugh when someone say's can I borrow a flat/hi/supercap I bet 9 times out of 10 it results in a sale.

From some of the posts here I'm now tempted by supercap on the 102 and CD5 !

To err is human; to really foul it up requires a computer.

Nice! Bet that sounds surprisingly good. Always regretted not buying HB1s...

Hi Madshadow

Yes, it is.

Andrew - got home last night, check my left speaker and woh, bugger me, the tweeter's blown! Must have happened Sunday.

Must get it fixed...
