Aerolam

Posted by: Peter Stockwell on 22 April 2001

In a previous naimless lifetime I obtained a free sample of this lightweight but stiff fibreboard from Mantecore (RIP). Anybody know where I can source some more of this board ?

thanks.

Peter

... a bit later ...

I've found from searching the web that it's now called hexlite. I'm looking for a source in France, ideally, but the UK would be ok. It's made by Hexcelcomposites, I sent them an e-mail.

Hi Peter,

try here for a starter...

http://www.conservation-by-design.co.uk/boards/boards21.html

In fact,a quick trawl using my favourite search engine (www.google.com),using the word "hexlite" as the search word, reveals quite a few bits and pieces of info

Hope this is useful...

Regards

You are not making an equipment rack are you?
I'd be interested to know how it turns out if you do.
But just don't tell Russ Andrews wink

PS I thought aerolam was made from aluminium, rather than fibre?

I think Aerolam is avaliable from RS components. Do you know who they are? I dont know if they exist in France. I have some experience of this material. Pink Triangle used it for their turntable sub-chasis. Celestion used it for the cabinet of the SL600 and 700. Aerolam consists of 2 aluminium skins arround a honeycomb core of alluminium. There is also a similiar material called Fibrelam consisying of phenolic coated paper honeycomb and carbon fibre skins (I have used this myself). Also a board using glass fibre skins and phenolic coated paper and one using glass fibre skins and alluminium honeycomb. As far as I know only Aerolam is avaliable from RS. I hope this helps. If you need any more help I will do my best

I got a response from hexcel .... basically, a stuff you, we don't give a s**t if you want small quantitities. Although it was a polite response.

I couldn't find aerolam on french RS site.

Peter,

If they are not interested in supplying you in "small" quantities, then you could "politely" enquire as to location of their stockists in your local area, perhaps you could get some that way.

Well looking for a stockist was essentially what I was asking them, although I might not have been explicit enough.

I have had a look through my RS catalogues. The info is as follows.
look in the 'Engineering materials' book, which is book 5 page 171. listed as 'composite boards'.

Aluminium/Aluminium
board size Stock No. price 1-4 Price 5-7
300/300/12.7 325-7445 £40.18 £36.16
480/600/12.7 325-7451 £90.42 £81.38

GRP/Nomex
board size stock No. Price 1-4 price5-7
300/300/12.7 325-7423 £66.18 £59.56
480/600/12.7 325-7439 £112.69 £101.42

V.A.T. & P&P must also be added!!
Telephone for RS 01536 201 201 idont know what the code from France is.
Fax 01536 201 501

I hope this is of help. RS. Does not strike me as cheap! I use a bit of the GRP/Nomex under my pre-amp and it did make a worthwhile improvement. However, i did not pay for it (a strange gift). Also the subchasis of my turntable is made from 2 layers of the carbon fibre stuff laminated together and this does work very well. But then again I would think that wouldnt I.

Markymark,
Have you got a picture of the turntable that you built? How does it compare with, say, the LP12?

Mark,

you're right +- 100GBP is not cheap for a piece of board, but that's the stuff I'mm looking for. Preferably in a 6,35mm thickness or thereabouts. I'll keep the UK reference in mind. I tried it on the the French site ... they don't have it.

I'll keep looking for a french supplier for the moment.
