Any Crimson owners here ;?
Posted by: blackforest on 02 December 2005
I have not found much on the Crimson pre- and poweramplifiers here - but besides the critical size of this company I have read good things about it.
They have also been described as a real alternative to Naim amplification.
As I have a 610C and two 630Ds at home I would be really interested in discussing things with other Crimson owners? Generally: How is the synergy with other Naim products such as speakers, CDPs, and so on...?
Anyone has them? Looking froward to hear from you.
Regards, +Blackforest.

Are you using DNM Solidcore ls cables?

Hi blackforest and also Samuel,
Yes, I agree that the jump from $1400 for the 610 to $7000 for the 710 is quite substantial, but the improvement in performance is also quite considerable. The 710 sounds even less "electronic" than the 610 and for lack of any better description than the old saw of "removing sonic veils", the 710 truly removes several of them. Also, I think that the 710's phono section is significantly better than the 610's, which may not be a consideration for everyone. I briefly ran the 710 into the 630s, but quickly found that the 640s offered yet another bump up in performance. Fortunately for me, selling the 252/SC(olive) and 250II yielded exactly what I needed to purchase the 710 and 640s new, with a little spare change to pocket. As I said earlier, listening to the 610/630s combination had already convinced me that I preferred that presentation to the 252/250II. In that context, the 710's purchase price of $7000 is almost exactly half the current price of $13,750 for the 252 and SC2. Taking that one step further, I think that a 710 to 552 comparison might be very interesting. (Putting on my Nomex suit now )
Yes, I am using all DNM cabling, including the DIN to bullet RCA plug CD interconnect. I had converted to DNM several months before my encounter with Crimson. I found the DNM to provide such a substantial improvement, I wondered out loud once to my Crimson dealer in Austin as to why the fellow in GB from whom I purchased a set of speaker wire over eBay would part with it. He answered that he thought that most listeners not using kit that gets music "right", like Naim or Crimson, simply cannot hear the difference because the electronics don't pass the difference through.

I am happy to do that for you.

When I connect my (cheap) CDP (= Playstation 2) to my Crimson 610 the noise over the phono section is noticeably louder than before. If I disconnect the CDP the phono input is alomost dead quit again...
What's the reason for that - has anyone discovered a similar problem so far?
Regards, +Blackforest.
PS
@Cosmoliu - sounds very interesting. I'd really like to see the new pre in person but with just one dealer in this city it is not very likely for that to happen too soon!

Blackforest, ultimately, pink fish media will be a better place for answers to your questions since they dont have much to do with naim.
Also (IMO) it is a bit unfair to use up naim's bandwith with such topics.

?!????
You must be joking VLN - if you look some posts above you will find yourself a few times... So what are you trying to tell me?
On the other hand a lot of stuff is discussed here with no direct connection to naim; just one word: speakers. what have spendor, harbeth, and the likes to with naim?? nothing, but it's nevertheless a topic.

No reason to panic
WRT pink fish media, I recall that there are some crimson users as well and you will have input from non-naim users, too.

Those speakers are discussed here because they are used with naim electronics. Notice a pattern?
Oh never mind.

Notice a pattern?
...and I intend to use my non Naim electronics with Naim speakers (either SBL or Ariva).
Notice a pattern?
Cheers, *Blackforest.

you should rename your thread ... something like: "which crimson amp to use with SBLs"

You're right Jean-Christophe. I will rename this thread into "NAIM AND crimson".

But honestly: I come here because I appreciate the Naim sound a lot. I think the CD-Players, the Tuners, and some of the more expensive amplifiers just rock - also the speakers are very very nice.
If I don't have a Naim pre/power combo at the moment (because I prefer the Crimson 610/630/630 over the Nait 5i (also the Creek 5350 was clearly better then the 5i)) this can easily change in some years.
So I can't really understand why I am accused of misusing Naim's bandwith.
Have a nice afternoon,
+Blackforest.

I don't think you are.
I'm using the Allae with a valve amp.
Mixing Naim kit with something else can have stunning results.

Hi blackforest,
I have not noticed that problem with the 710, but then again, my CD player could not be described as cheap. I can say that if a CD is playing and I am listening to an LP, the CD sound will "bleed" through and be barely audible between cuts.

I see no problem with discussing Crimson amps on this forum - I can't contribute as I've never seen or heard these amps.
I am happy with naim amplifiers because they recapture (and improve on) the sound I used to enjoy with Tresham (Nene Valley Audio) amps before I foolishly ditched them for a Croft valve combo - still that's in the past and I'm back on track now.
If a naim/Crimson setup sounds good to you then it must be good - simple as that and I, for one, am happy to read your posts about it.
Best regards, Rotf
