CDX Question

Posted by: novelty on 24 July 2003

Tango's thread reminded me of this so here it goes.

Out of my 1000+ cd's i have come across 2 discs that will not read/play when i close the tray(transport?)..

typically when the tray is closed the display blinks a little and the number of tracks on the cd appears and the disc plays

..on the problem discs the display blinks but no number appears as if the disc is not being 'read'..i push play and the infamous 'err' reading comes up..

i seem to recall a thread about some discs have different thickness and this can be problematic??

is this the case or am i in for a maintenance call??

the problem is specific to the same discs..one disc actually appears to 'rub' a little but when i close the tray 'extra slow' it reads/plays fine with no 'rub'..this disc is new and has what seems to be a pretty thick layer of 'paint or whatever they use' on the non-playing surface for the title/track listing..

tia to the forum.

I have had that problem on a couple of cds and it hasn't been a problem with the player. Some suggestions on this thread here. I've also found that sometimes by either continuosly pressing play it eventually works, or try selecting a different track from the remote and then pressing play.

good luck

Novelty.

On those disks, (typically warnerBros ones which appear to be really thin, plus the bit in the middle is even thinner) is to place a small amount of sticky tape where the rubber of your puck meets up will solve your problem.

I am confident that your problem is simply a case of slippage, most of my YES ones slip because the quality of the CD is poor.

No jokes on the contents!

thanks for the response. i figured as much..

my primary concern is that this is not a player issue and really a 'bad' disc issue..

though i guess the problem is still a shortcoming of the cdX as my 3.5 has no problem playing these discs..

i am eyeing CDS2's these days..when i sell the cdx is this issue a 'mentionable'?? do all cdx's have this problem??

Novelty.

The design of the naim CDP range is such that the puck will impart as little resistance as needed, as such some disks will be a problem. In my expereince its been one or two disks out of hundreds and the application of alittle tape sorts the problem out.

It certainly shouldn't put you off.

well i switched to one of my spare pucks and completely resolved the issue with the disc that rubbed and 'mostly' fixed the problem with the other disc..the other disc will occasionally get the 'err' but is much more agreeable..

funny thing is the previous puck's magnets seemed really strong almost too strong..so much so that when puting the puck in place the power of the magnets would 'slam' the puck in place and pull the transport upward..

this finding seems inconsistent with the premise that the 'err' readings were caused by the puck not holding the disc in place..

anyway the spare puck is working fine (read better)..i wonder if any of the remaining 800+ discs of my collection that have yet to run through the cdx will be 'problematic'?? hmmm..

thanks again Graham and Garyi.
best regards
