DVD5 + DVI + Interlaced possible in future?

Posted by: SimonJ on 01 June 2006

Does anyone know if it is technically possible for a DVD5 to output a 576i signal via DVI if the software inside it permitted? I know Arcam and others have done it via HDMI, but on the other side I know HDMI and DVI have subtle differences, so just wondered if the DVD5 didn't do it because A) Naim have no inclination of doing it, B) Naim have the inclination of doing it but haven't managed to do it yet or C) It is technically not possible due to whatever reason etc?

Interlaced is not available on the DVD5/n-Vi DVI ouptut for hardware reasons in its current state.

Scaler board will have interlaced available on HDMI though....

Dear Av@Naim............. So we will be able to put a scaler board into my DVD5 in 2 months time then?
Please?
Pretty please?

Hi Simon,

Back with a DVD5 again I see. Pleased?

The Arcam DV78 I owned and posted about here has now made way for a nice black FMJ DV27A. I was quite pleased with the DV78 but wanted something in black to fit in better in the cinema room and was SDI modifyable. In fact, my DV27A is currently residing in Guildford waiting for an SDI output board to be fitted (Daytona, if you're reading, please give Elliot a nudge Smile)

Like yourself, I've also got the ABT102 de-interlacer board fitted in the VP30 now. I remember you thought that the SDI mod was only marginally better than component but I thought I would go for it anyway as any differences will be even more apparent on the large screen. Should give the ABT102 a nice clean digital signal to do it's very best with.

Hi Allan,

Not quite gotit yet, but very shortly. Was going to pick it up this weekend, but family things got in the way. I will hopefully have it next week. I am currently running an Arcam DV79 via interlaced HDMI into the VP30 with pretty nice results but I know the DVD5 will blow that away. The VP30 into my plasma at native resolution via HDMI only works at 60hz. This works fine for DVD's but when watching Sky I think the frame rate conversion process is causing slight juddering which can be enoying at times so I tend to flick back to using RGBHV into the plasma. When I get the DVD5 I'll probably plug it into the VP30 via RGB from the SCART.

Simon,

Are you aware there is a 'trick' with the DV79 to get digital component video out of the HDMI? Here's a couple of quotes from Gordon over at AVF:

"Not only can the DV79 output 480I/576I via HDMI it can do it in component colourspace. Ths is as close as you can get to the data on the disc without SDI modding the player."

"To output that signal you need to enter the Arcam set up menu while the HDMI output is unattached and you are viewing an analogue output signal. Then
FORCE DVI=OFF
PRIORITY= ANALOGUE
PROGRESSIVE=OFF
DIGITAL OUTPUT= you can now change this to YUV.

No come out of the setup and plug in the hdmi lead and it'll be sticking out 480i/576i YUV. If you enter the set up menu again whle looking at the HDMI output and you navigate off the first page the ARCAM automatically resets itself to 480P/576P RGB digital output...so once done leave it...."

Cheers Allan, have done that and things look good. Now I have to watch Lord of the Rings through again. Will be doing a close comparison of DV79 v DVD5 when I get the DVD5. Smile

Thats the idea. (I am not aware of release date as yet though).

Simon,

Have you collected your DVD5 yet?

My DV27A came back yesterday with the SDI board fitted. Wow, wow, wow. Better than I was expecting based on previous discussions we've had. Definitely looks 'cleaner', like a layer of dirt removed. Many thanks to PJ HiFi who did the conversion.

I think the VP30+ABT102 is really making the most of the SDI signal and when viewed on a large projected image the difference is very apparent.

With this, and the BBC HD feed I've now got in the cinema room, I'm one very happy camper.
