What's the story in Balamory, wouldn't you like to know?
What's the story in Balamory, where would you like to go?
Will it be treats with Pocket and Sweet, is that where we should go?
Baalaaamooorryy
Or up to the castle inventing with Archie, he's ever so clever and ever so arty!

That bloody Wham! Christmas record - or any Christmas record for that matter, with the possible exception of Slade. The Pogues thing is the worst by far, worse even than Sir Cliff.
Posted on: 28 December 2006 by ryan_d
Rasher, now thats a little harsh. The pogues/kirsty mccoll song isn't THAT bad. if anything just exceptionally overplayed, even for this time of year. Cliff has to win on this one.

Too much flak directed at Christmas songs. Yes, there are some ghastly ones, and they're even ghastlier when overplayed as much as they are, but they're still better than Michael Bolton and the like.
And if anyone would really prefer to listen to "Metal Machine Music" than "Last Christmas" then they're just cutting off their nose to spite their face: at least anyone subjected to the Wham! will be let off after 3 or 4 minutes of forgettable fluff, hardly the case with the relentless grinding of MMM...

I'm sorry, I know in these forums she is all but worshipped as a deity. I put up with that crap in the late 70's because I had no choice, now I have a choice.

Anything from all the italian pop production.
Verbose, empty, rhetorical and musically childish.

Especially from PFM. Didn't realise they were still around. Just clicked your link and the gibberish that is written on the first page.
"Within a group etc" sorry but that to me is just over pretentious crap.
Everyone to their own taste. They were certainly not mine even when I first heard them in the 70's.

Hi ROTF!
Like Ewemon write they're still around.
Not in Italy fo course and if they're roaming the country only few knows.
There was "one hundred nuts' gigs" place my friend and i were use to go every friday or saturday.
We saw groups like New Bomb Turks, Not Wist, Lali Puna etc etc
Fantastic, out of the world place in these times of cheap american influenced music, but closed beacuse of the noise in the one house neighbour.
PFM were up in the so called charts when i was 14/15 years old and slowly disappeard.
Many other bads did the same and many other interesting bands try hard to survive.
I don't know the numbers but italian music industry is a few men businness.
After the introduction of the law that limited the number of broadcasting permissions a lot of small radio stations did close and paradoxically the most used source for music news became television.
Even the vatican owns radio and tv channels and a good number of records labels.
The last radio station i worken for was partially owned by the local bishop and my problems begann when they ask me not to send things like David Sylvian or REM ro Felt or all the considered not "in line".
Here a list of names that in my humble opinion you should try to listen to:
Afterhours
Almamegretta
Area
Franco Battiato
Lucio Battisti
Bluevertigo
Vinicio Capossela
Carmen Consoli
CCCP
CSI
Fabrizio De Andrè
Faust'o
Gaznevada
Krisma
Marlene Kuntz
Mau Mau
Le orme
Perigeo and New Perigeo
Quintorigo
Luigi Tenco
Garbo
24 Grana
Eugenio Finardi
Casino Royale
Some of them are very old but i would saty away from singers like Luciano Ligabue that takes pieces from Springsteen and REM albums and become number one in the charts.
What i like more in the list are people like 24 Grana (first 4 records), Garbo.........
Capossela did some of the best italian songs i've ever heard.
Enjoy!

yea, he's not everyone's cup of tea, but he has actually done some good stuff in the past, but his later stuff seems to be prity dire.

ROFT/Gianluigi
Saw them on the Chocolate Kings tour, and which ever was the one before that at the the City Hall in Newcastle many moons ago.
Tight band played some decent tunes, but always sounded better in Italian than the English lyrics they were obviously being encouraged to use to "cross over". We had Bernard Cribbins singing about "Digging a hole", PFM had "Four holes in the ground". Happy days.

Even his early stuff sounds pretty dire on my Naim setup. Very compressed. Oh and of course he is not "listed" as I said - that should read "one listen..."
