Miles Davis - Live at the Plugged Nickel

How good is this live box set? A friend gave me a 'highlights' CD and it seems to be quite exceptional. Listening to it now. Is the quality of the playing and recording consistent throughout. My favourite live Miles Davis recording is the Complete Live in Stockholm. How does it compare to this classic?

The live box set is superb and consistent throughout. They play the same tracks on a number of occasions but each rendition is different.
It is a classic album and well worth having, if you can find one. Better start searching on ebay......£299 on amazon.

It is very good and shows how the same number was interpreted differently by Miles' band at each performance.
Whether or not it is worth £299 is another matter! You will have to decide

Just to echo what Lontano said, if you can afford it, then chasing a copy of the box set down is worth it.
It has 7 CD boxes in the case, but one has 2 CDs in it. I have seen some questioning about the set if it has the full 8 CDs on Ebay listings, the double box explains why there are only 7 boxes in there.
The performances are nice as it is the 'second great quintet' but playing a lot of of earlier material, before they became quite experimental.
It will probably be quite a lot of money now, but if you don't like it, you will certainly be able to sell it on Ebay in six months, or a year's time, and get your money back, or even make a profit. There are still some new sealed copies around, I got my copy just over a year ago, I think on Ebay, and that was sealed.

Or wait for it to be re-released, as I'm sure it will be in time, although I'm not holding my breath.

Just to let you know that there is a 'like new' copy from Taiwan, still has plastic wrapper, and also a set of 9 original Miles Davis Columbia box sets, including The Plugged Nickel, from the UK, on Ebay right now.
Both currently at good prices, but not sure if the bidding will get lively.

I might be able to help you locate this (Mods please note ... I am not selling a copy!)
Don't know how to contact you via perosnal message or email though.
Can anyone help me here?

Glad I bought it when it came out. I see it once in a while for around $200.

Thanks everyone. Still pondering whether to get it. I got a shock when I saw the price on Amazon. I never expected it to cost that much. Anyway, I am just enjoying the 'Highlights' CD at the moment. Coltrane's 'Live at the Village Vanguard' box set was a lot cheaper. I purchased a set more than a decade ago when I was still in the UK.

The Plugged Nickel box set from Taiwan on Ebay went for $273.00 / £170.96.
The set of 9 box sets, including the Plugged Nickel with a starting price of £430 had no bids and has been relisted at the same price. A lot of money, but if no one else is bidding still a good price for those sets.
Considering that the complete Columbia albums is available from Amazon for £149, which covers the other box sets mostly, although I think will not have a lot of the alternate sessions, perhaps £260 is a lot for the other 8 box sets. Basically £100 for the alternate versions, and the original packaging.
I have the 9 box sets, and must admit if I were buying now, I might prefer the original albums to listen to as they were released, rather than the complete sessions in order, even if I do get a lot more versions.
