Rant about tradesman
Posted by: nap-ster on 21 February 2006
Recently had 3 tiles fall off my roof during a windy night. My house is two years old. The firm who tiled my roof were called and the tiles replaced.
15 minute job, 3 tiles @ £1.45 replaced. Invoice received for £96.
OUCH!!!! I am definitely in the wrong business.

Was it really 15 mins....
........including assessment visit, picking up tiles, travel time etc
but to answer your question...well, it sounds like it at the moment.
Cheers

Would you consider doing it yourself to save £96 ?

So, 15 mins at your house - how long was the journey to and from your house, and what else did the guys get done that day - I am in the building trade, and often, to do a job like yours, means giving up a morning or afternoon as one cannot tell how long a job will take - I assume 2 guys, a van, a ladder or even 2 - I know it sounds like a lot of money, but we all need to be aware that as the recently introduced Health and Safety regs make it harder to do a simple job without risk assesments, scaffolding, harnesses etc costs of repairs will rise, and it isn't all going into my (or their) pocket....
Keep your job, and hope you can keep your builder, as many will be forced out by rising costs, and customers who think it is easy money - those days are long gone...

Good service is worth paying for. Keep your bilder and use them every time - establishing a relationship with a person usually leads to a mutually beneficial cost situation.

Hey Nap-ster - didn't mean to sound like I was having a go at you, but as an honest builder (believe me, it's true..) I find it very hard to explain to clients just what it costs to run a business, and why it has cost them a load of cash for a little job - most small companies, once they start to grow, will turn down little works as they are more hassle than it is worth, and down-time is costly..
As Joe90 says, keep a good builder - it will save you in the long term, and you wll have less need to stress when shit happens..!

6 weeks ago our dishwasher broke down after 11 years of faultless service.
A door closing spring had given up the ghost.
Easy to repair apparently.
10 days later a repair man appears with a pair of springs and a screwdriver.
Lets cut a long story short.
After I brought in a lot of my own tools.. he pulled the thing so hard he broke the front feet, fractured the water inlet pipe, and broke the rear support feet. Apparently the floor tiles should not have been put down after it had been fitted, it raised the floor by 15mm.
There was 75mm of adjustment on the dishwasher feet IF he had turned them correctly!!
14 days later.. he returns.
Rear feet no longer available. Dishwasher scrapped. A new one was free as we are covered on insurance.
Zanussi out of stock for 4 weeks.
They phone after two.. its here.. hooray.
Delivered today.
I had removed the old one last night.
All that had to be done was plug in the new one, attatch the cold water feed, and put the outlet pipe to the correct place.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo they cant do that can they, its to easy.
So they decide to uscrew the washing machine cold water supply (WHY??) and they forgot to turn OFF the mains first??
Result.. flooded kitchen & mrs Steve had to turn off water at the stopcock.
They were asked to politely leave so that Mr Steve could do the job correctly on his return.
Looks like music aint on my menu tomorrow.
