OK So now the castles have been Naimed

Posted by: terryborth on 07 June 2003

What is the story. Set it up used all the appropriate stuff. Sound OKon the first day. On the second day it sounded like crap on and off. First half of the third day also. Called the Naim shop said he will send a guy up to look and listen this comming Monday (90 mile one way trip for him).

But wait, This afternoon the set sounds great! I mean, REALLY GREAT!I know the manuels say leave it on and from three to five days it will come to its own. I thought it was so much talk.

By Jove, I think it ran a course of new set up. This is all second hand material 102/hi cap/250 with a cd3.5/ hi cap.

Is this what others have experienced or has the old boy (me) lost it again?

It is normal, goodness knows why, but it is.

Best advice is leave it powered up 365 days a year.

Castles are a nice speaker, very civilised sound.

What type of Castles are you using and what do you like about them?

The speakers are called the Winchester. They are 1991 vintage. They are tall, very tall! WxHxD 235 x 1085 x 460mm.

Why I like them:
Sweet, mellow, warm sounding.AS Mike stated quite civilized. Beautiful woodwork and no stands necessary. Hence, the funds go for the speaker and only the speakeralso no need to fuss with what stands. Getting too old for that stuff.

I have seen, on the internet, the new line up of speakers. I understand the company has new owners since my Winchesters. Iam also told they are very plesant people. The new line up at the big end have the same general situation with respect to the speaker location and porting system.

I had read somewhere the exact length of the internal sound chambers was accomplished by a fellow located in a shed in which he spent considerable time (months)changing the length of the sound chamber until it sounded "just right".No electronic measurements just a man in a shed and his emotional reaction to the sound. I also understand the speakers (Winchester) do not look especially impressive when analyzed with sound wave scopes etc. but I can assure you they sound very good with emtional impact and musicality.

The new speakers: It is my guess they went to reinforced cones (away from the paper cones which I have). To avoid a problem with deformation of the paper (and sound) at high volumnes.

Let me know what you find and what you think of the new Castles.

I think I heard Howards. Tall, thin, with a slot at the base for porting. They sounded very smooth and controled but not lacking in detail, pace or clout. Oh yeah, and an upward firing unit. Cost just oner £1000 UK I think.

Takes me months/years to ruminate and listen to kit - unless something goes BANG! So I'm not itching to get a pair. But right now, they'll be the first to audition when the time comes.
