Conflicts between home theatre and straight audio

Question: With these components;NAT01/555/552/500/B&W802Ds and AV2/DVD5/175 can the system be set up so that the 552 invariably feeds the 500 to L/R front whatever input is chosen i.e. satellite/tuner/CD/DVD.No slagging my ignorance please, after all I am asking for your help in learning and I defer to your collective knowledge.I am not "au fait" with the mechanics:just the sound.....

use the lead supplied with the dvd5 into the av input on the 552 and thats it
with regards the 500 you will however be only getting about 50% of its output as regardless whether your av2 reads 90 on the volume its only about 12 o'clock on the 552 due to the unity gain process

in my post change the dvd5 to av2

then select stereo or direct on the av2, i prefered direct when listening to sky thru av2
as for 555 /01 i would assume these would be listened to thru the 552 and not the av2

If you set up the 552 for unity gain on input 4 which is the input from your AV2 you are in effect bypassing the 552 and going straight from the AV2 to the 500 and using the AV2 volume control for all the speakers for all the inputs into the AV2 ie TV, Satellite, Cable, DVD etc. You need to set up the volume levels on the AV2 so the fronts, center and rears are the same with the AV2 test signal - see AV2 Manual for full details. If you do not use the unity gain feature on the 552 you have to setup the 552 volume each time you use the AV2 input. This might seem ok but usually means the 552 volume is at about the 12 o'clock position and if you inadvertantly switch to the CD input you will probably deafern yourself and the neighbours or damage the speakers. There is as neil stated a reduction in the overall volume by using the unity gain - mine is probably even greater as there are small value resistors in the interconnect between my AV2 and 552 because of the long lead length but overall if you want to wind up the AV2 the volume level is still very adequate as my neighbours who back on to the end of my garden can testify. They also enjoyed Pink Floyd - The Pulse.
The unity gain or AV2 will not affect any other 552 inputs ie CD Tuner etc which will continue to be controlled by the 552 volume control.
In short use the unity gain on the 552 for the AV2 input - setup the AV2 test signal volume for all your speakers and enjoy...

Best wishes - Trevor
