Alternative Power Supplies

I have obtained an industrial 230/24v power supply from one of our sites. This is designed for control systems and is rated at 20A at 24V. Out of curiosity I rigged up some cabling so it plugs into my system the same as my SNAPS (dual railed).

The unit actually sounded very good indeed. It gave a faster sound with a little less bloom in the bass and more control. Treble was sharper and may be a little harsh on some tracks. The whole sound was a little cleaner and more focused. Also more lively. However, the SNAPS does sound a touch warmer, more laid back!

I will try and find out the price for this unit tomorrow. I suspect it is cheaper than a HICAP.

I will continue to listen for a few more days then revert back to the SNAPS to compare. If interested I can post my findings later.

I understand NAIM would not approve of the mod and accept their stance, but it is a smooth and quiet supply.

Have any of you tried something similar? I would be interested in comments. How much difference between a SNAPS(DR)and HICAP?

It looks fine but too industrial to grace a Fraim. It looks best on DIN rail inside a great big control panel!

Maybe I'll get a box to put it in if I decide to keep it, that way I can cover the mains rail frown
