Convert a heathen - £1000 budget (absolute max)

Posted by: kan man on 09 December 2002

Hi all

One of my colleagues is willing to see the light and put together a budget system from second hand components. The brief is a CD player, amp and speakers for under a grand - less if possible. The kit must be in reasonable supply on the second hand market and the speakers must be stand mount or relatively small floor standing. I'm thinking CD3 or Planet with a Nait1/2 but stumped on speakers. Any suggestions on combinations you know work well together are most welcome.

CD3.5 - £550
32.5/110 - £250
Kans - £200

If you are stumped for speakers would headphones be acceptable?

Roy - has to be speakers, he's just asked my why he can't have four! By the sounds of it, boundary reinforcement speakers would fit with his lounge, anything needing a couple of feet of free space into the room are out of the equation.

Steve - Kans may be the answer and if I can sort him with CD and amp first I'll take a pair round to try. To be honest though I have my doubts, I think he may be better with something less revealing. He's used to a Kenwood stack system...

Having looked on Loot it may be that we can fit a Nait3R into the equation at £425.

You should be able to get a 32.5/140 for that sort of cash and I know which I'd rather have. For someone used to a mini system though I can see the appearance and remote of the Nait appealling though.

BTW I ran a bedroom system of CD3.5, 32.5/110 into Mission 731LE's for a while and that worked surprisingly well. I suspect you'd get usable results with most decent £150-200 standmounters. I paid £600 for the CD3.5 used, £250 for the 32.5/110 used and £150 for the Missions's (which were the rears in my AV setup) so that's bang on £1000 as well.

CD3 (or 3.5)
Nait (1 or 2)
Royd Minstrals <small floorstanders>
(2nd hand if you can find some)

Awesome!

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

personally I wouldn't run that set up without a Hicap.

Certainly a Hicap (or SNAPS or Flatcap) would improve it but IMHO a bare, reasonable condition 32.5/110 will still slaughter a Nait 3 or 92/90.3 plus there is more room for future improvements.

Maybe the 3.5 can be had for less.

Perhaps. A SNAPS could be had for £100 (possibly less) and it's a worthwhile addition.

Thanks for the replies so far folks, it's all good stuff. Bearing in mind he's completely new to this field of nerdery I have to tread a careful path. The older pre/power combinations offer the best sound per pound but aesthetics and some degree of 'normality' (an amplifier lives in one box, why does it need two or three boxes?) comes into play.

Thus my current thinking is a CD3 or 3.5 and a Nait3 or possibly slimline 92/90 combination would be the best to aim for. I can lead him further astray at a later date if he gets the bug. If we get these at the right price s/h it means there is enough money left over to get a pair of decent speakers new - beech finish is now a requirement.

Any suggestions for decent stand mounts that can be had new or s/h in beech?

Steve
