How to deal with dealer...

Posted by: jackliebling on 23 November 2006

Dear All,

I am currently home-demoing an old (1994 ish) NAC 82 from my local dealer, I love it. The price I have been quoted is £1400. I know that I can get a 2001 NAC 82 for five pounds less from another reputable dealer and could probably find one for £900 privately.

Am I now obliged to buy through the dealer that has allowed me to home-demo their stock? I feel a bit beholden to them, but on the other hand the high price is really putting me off. I only have limited experience of dealing with high-class hifi shops...

Any advice?

Cheers

As with others, I think £1400 is a bit high.
I've got an 82, which cost me £1291.00 in 2002, via ebay.
(Oh, and I would never consider replacing it with a 202!)

I think you need to sort a few things out in your own mind.

What was the basis of the home dem offer? It sounds pretty open to me. More or less "If you happen to like the sound of the 82 you can have it for £1400"

Well, do you like the sound of it? do you REALLY like the sound of it. Is it worth £1400 to aqcuire this sound? Is the kit in mint condition, fully serviced and fully updated to latest spec and does it come with a two year warranty? If you answer "yes" to all of these (and probably a few more) questions, then it looks like you have found your Nirvanah. Buy it. Don't quibble over a hundred quid or so. You want to be able to work with this dealer in the future, especially if the kit fails.

If you didn't answer "yes" to all the above, then the 82 in question is probably not for you, so just tell the dealer "thanks, but no thanks"

Now start again. A little more the wiser.

Cheers

I think £1400 is far too much. I paid, I recollect, £1200 to my Naim main dealer for my much newer 82. I will trade this against a 252 eventually, at the same dealer, Loud and Clear.

Having a good long term relationship with your dealer is very important and they must know that.

IMO: buy the newer one.

That's very cheap for a 52 / Supercap, in my opinion. I'd have expected a good few hundred more for it.

Mickey

Someone on another Forum is asking 3200 for 52/Supercap!! Arthur Daley could not have been involved could he???

Frank

I wouldn't like to say, to be honest. Was it a private sale or a trade in?

I sold my 52/supercap, both of 2000 vintage earlier this year for £3,100 in private sales. Nobody called Arthur was involved at any stage, nor were members of the Trotter family.

IMO there is an obligation to deal with the dealer if you ask to borrow from them. Doesn't mean you must buy from them, but you would need to work through the possibilties first.

If you were offered a "surprise" loan without having a good idea of reasonable prices first, negotiation would be a fair start.

Get the service history first.

Yes - it is about buying - rather than hi-fi.

E-Bay threads also migrate.
