And that's the Babe Ruth.

(requires, but may not reward, effort)

So who, appart from Dickinson & Morris, can actually make Melton Mowbray pork pies. Does this ruling cover Leicester itself, with its large factories churning out nasty imitations for Waitrose et al.

Laugh Out Loud!

I am as happy as a free-range Gloucester Old Spot in the muck, but am declining to mention anything about Audio at all for a very very long time now.

So let's keep it clean and talk about non-conroversial stuff like Polarbear's favourite non-fish food!

I love a pork pie too, but the best one I ever had was from a butcher's shop in Newbury in 1979. Running it a close second was one from a similar establishment in Halifax.

The pork pie, when done properly, is a fine example of traditional British food.

I love 'em!

Most probably Griffin's, on the bridge over the Kennet - they specialise in pork in all shapes and sizes, including pies that taste superb.

That's it Don, thanks!

I'll have to go back and see if they are as good thirty years on as I sometimes work out that way now!

Let's hope you're not disappointed - absence makes the heart.... etc etc

BTW, perhaps Adam might rectify the spelling mistake in the title - wouldn't want those Frechies cashing in due to a simple error on this here forum....

What do others like to drink, with their pork pies?

George, can you believe that the Gloucester Old Spot is actually endangered?

I'm not sure it's a good thing to eat the last of them. Or is it?

Dear Don,

An ale goes nicely for me - preferably from the Teme Valley Brewery!

Dear Count,

I am a boy from the "village." I grew up on a farm. I worked for my father for three years for nowt! I missed an education as a result, and he went bust when I was eighteen! But I do know about livestock, and crops, and am saddened that the GOS is endangered. It should be kept because pigs will be reared free-range again as standard within our lifetimes.

PS: Don, I suppose it is Mowbray or something!

Bit like Smirnoff and Smirnow, then! Smirnoff is bloody awful!

And neatly corrected in the title, thanks to Adam!

Cheers.

That wouldn't be champagne then, Don, it would be sparkling wine! I didn't realise they had vineyards in Leicestershire, though!

Perhaps if over there before the end of the month Mark you can collect some and bring them over to the WNPS meet...

Not many around Newbury either, althought there are one or two around Reading I believe.

English was always a weak subject of mine.....

Pies from Melton/Newbury, champaigne from.....well...Reims.

Worse than that you could attract hungry polar bears!

B***er!

Does it close on a Monday then, Don? Only there was no opening times notice in the window.

I did notice that it is also the 'home of the Newbury Sausage' which I also fancy giving a try.

According to Mrs D, yes - they close Sunday and Monday. Sorry, but even I didn't know this.

I haven't tried the Newbury Sausage. I suppose I really should..........

No need to apologise, Don - it's not your fault!

It took me back seeing Newbury Lock. It was a trip along the Kennet and Avon (by car) when I visited Newbury all those years ago. It was being restored at the time. We ended up at Devizes flight which wasn't in working order in those days but quite a bit of it along the way was.

I'll still get a pork pie from there if it kills me, though!

Let's hope they aren't that bad........

We are going to a wedding in January, location is between Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds (can't quite recall off hand) so if push comes to shove, I could deliver.

Don

Many thanks for the offer, but my Sudbury is in Middlesex, just at the bottom of Harrow on the Hill. The Sudbury you are referring to is in Suffolk - unless of course you are flying there and you can arrange an air drop!

Seriously though, I work around Reading and Swindon sometimes so dropping in to Newbury is no chore.

Thanks for your kindness, though.

Mark
