Classic Goldie

When drum 'n' bass star Goldie came second to Sue Perkins in the strangely absorbing BBC2 series Maestro, it provoked mixed feelings. On the one hand, Perkins was a better amateur conductor and deserved to win; on the other, Goldie's way with an orchestra was transfixing, the more so given how remote it was from his own brand of music. You couldn't help feeling that something further would come from the collusion (or collision) between Goldie and the classical world. Sure enough, it has. He was commissioned to write an orchestral work on the theme of evolution for this year's Proms and this two-parter charts how that unfolded. With no traditional music education, Goldie has to adapt his studio-based skills to harness the resources of a symphony orchestra and chorus - as well as the mighty Royal Albert Hall organ. Helping him on this musical journey is his Maestro mentor Ivor Setterfield and composer Anna Meredith. DVDs were unavailable, but it should be fascinating to watch.

Part 1 is one BBC2 at 9pm tonight.

I watched this last night, but missed the first few minutes (damn that Naim system Big Grin)
I thought it was very interesting. Did anyone else see it?

I watched with awe. It was like a kid in the sweet shop - so many things to choose from (sounds and textures from the orchestra)that he didn't know where to go first. The section with the RHA pipe organ had his eyes popping. Looking forward to the final piece next week.
