Supercapped Stageline vs. Groove Plus

Can anyone shed any light on the differences between these two phono stages, especially in the context of a Naim system? Thanks.

I haven't tried the stageline powered by a supercap.

The Groove+ is one heckuva step up from the Groove, so I will be selling my Groove in the next month or two and getting a Groove+ instead.

Frank,

In what ways is the Groove+ better than the Groove? Have you compared it to a Prefix?

Evan -

I have a question for you. What are the differences between the Stageline run off your 552 and off the Supercap?

Also, you might want to keep in mind that Naim is said to be developing a new, higher-end stand alone phono stage; one goal is to reduce RFI (ala the new Prefix).

Has anyone compared the Groove+ to a Dynavector P75? Especially with a low output MC cart (.22mV output Helikon SL). Frank?

Arthur,

I've exchanged several emails with Naim over the last several months inquiring whether Naim would be producing a stand alone 500 level phono stage. I've been told that although it's a project some staff would like to see happen, it's not a priority and will likely not be considered, if at all, until the spring. I am not hopeful.

I really believe Naim is dropping the ball on this one, especially since the new preamps do not accept phono boards. Take a look at the frequent posts on this forum alone regarding phono stages. There's great interest. Furthermore, there are many of us who do not use an LP12, which eliminates the Prefix from consideration. Finally, with phono stages such as the Groove available, Naim will likely lose market share to other manufacturers.

Naim is always my first choice, but in this instance, I feel that I am being forced to consider other options. In my system, I'm not sure that a Stageline, albeit Supercapped, cuts it.

I have not experimented with powering the Stageline directly from the 552, but am pessimistic regarding the benefit of doing so.

Sorry about taking so long to reply. The Groove+ does to a Groove what you'd expect a £2000 power supply to do. I always thought that my front end was the weak link but the Groove+ seems to indicate that there is still life in the old Gyro/Mechanic/Te Kaitora yet. I dread to think what an Orbe or XV-1S would do. The + adds a lot more transparency and micro-dynamics. It makes more sense of phrasing and nuance - things which I had never had any cause to complain about with the standard Groove. It's effortless in the way that the Groove is effortless in comparison to a Microgroove. It's a bit good...

Ed, I haven't directly tried the Groove+ against the Dynavector which is stunning value for money. The Groove is already in a different league to the P75 provided you like what the Groove does. However, the P75 is making life difficult for the Microgroove and is running the Microgroove+ close too so definitely get a demo of the P75 against the lower Tom Evans products because I think it's a steal at the price.

Frank.

HI

What is your Groove+ loaded at for the Dynavector and what have you used to patch it into your pre-amp.

Cynical hat on...

...but the main goal is to charge more money as the customers will pay it Razz

My Groove is setup for 100 ohms I think. Basically, I told Tom it was for a Te Kaitora. My Groove+ will probably be setup similarly as I am in the process of selling my Te kaitora (there's a new mkII which is supposedly the bee's knees).
