Good James Brown recordings?
Posted by: Harty601 on 16 September 2008
Hi Guys, I have recently upgraded from an arcam solo and bose set up to a supernait H/C, CD5x & PMC DB1i. Suddenly I can actually hear music again!! I was listening to the sound track from Quadrophenia and really enjoyed Night Train by James Brown. Any recommendations for good JB recordings??
Thanks,
Richard

I recently got the 50th Anniversary Collection on SHM-CD,
which sounds very good to my ears.

And to mine. Hard to believe the recordings are 40+ years old.

Thanks guys, will give that a go. Has anyone got any HD CDs, the CD5x plays them but I never see them for sale.

HDCD never really took off as a format,
so relatively speaking there aren't that many about & no new releases.
Naim used the HDCD chip in the CDPs because it is sonically better then the standard CD chips when playing CDA. They also concluded CDA is sonically better than HDCD, & that's why Naim Label records don't have any HDCD releases.
I've heard some good stuff on HDCD (e.g. 'Perception' - The Doors box set on Rhino),
but plenty of mediocre & dreadful quality too so watch out!
The SHM CDs are consistently good (with one or two exceptions),
so if you haven't already take a peak at the SHM CD Verdict thread.

Excuse my ignorance of these things, but what is SHM?? Is it a different mastering process to other releases - Play.com has this version - http://www.play.com/Music/CD/4-/170382/50th-Anniversary...lection/Product.html

That's not the SHM CD version Richard.
Have a read of the SHM CD thread - I think all the info' is there.
If you follow the 50th Anniversary Collection link,
you'll find more info' about SHM CD at CD Japan.

Just going by Lp's, I'd say the two Live at the Apollo series, Sex Machine, Hot pants. There used to be a collection on CD called Star Time, one of the best of the box sets may no longer be in print.

I definitely second Star Time. Great music spanning a large chunk of his career.

I third Star Time - the best for an instant collection. Vinyl is always better though
- and plenty of it is around. I was just at a record show this weekend and picked up James Brown Tribute to Little Willie John and his instrumental organ LP on Smash records.

James Brown comes alight live. A great "mid-period" set, with Bootsy Collins et al, is the one from Paris Olympia 1971.
The CD is called Love Power Peace, though I think this might be a time when the DVD is worth getting.
Much of it is on YouTube e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPyaF7_iUTA
How I would have loved to be there!

I shall "fourth" Star Time. Fundamentally, it's all you need.

I live on "in the jungle groove" which is a compilation full of the best beats on the planet - from the 69 - 71 transition from funk to soul. It is infectious.
