You-tube

Hi all,

I noticed in another forum, there was a thread for links to new/less well known artists that appear on you-tube. Obviously the quality is not so good, but it does allow you get a flavour of music and singers that they may not of heard before.

Any thoughts on this, does anyone use you-tube as a "research tool ?"

Obviously boring topic, note to self - must try harder Frown

Not so boring. I've found that my Iphone connected to my tv and streaming from wi-fi makes YouTube an excellent research tool. The danger/joy is that one tends to get distracted by the other goodies on there.

Thanks Mike,

I know exactly what you mean, I can happily wander round on you-tube for hours too, so to minimise this, do you reckon there is any mileage in people posting links to interesting music they have found ?

And ...

Both these threads ran for about a year and timed out in January.

There is an broad selection in both, though sadly I was almost the only contributor most of the time - they are both worth hunting through ...

Right.
Lately i'm using my laptop in that way more than my stereo.
I often use allmusic.com as well.
The two tools are, as Barrie said, not perfect but is the fastest way i have to make myself an idea about what you all are listening to.
The best side of the net?

Gianluigi, I've never looked at allmusic, I'll give it a go

I like youtube but I find it more useful for established acts. MySpace and Last.FM are much better for new stuff

Thanks, and given Mikes point, it can be really helpful to get pointers to those snippets which people find interesting/amusing/good/great.

The other point might be that one persons established act is brand new to someone-else.

I've lived in "mainland Europe" for 12 years and am wonderfully suprised at what I discover, that everybody else knew - in Sweden, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany - you get my point

Hi Barrie

Not only finding new music, but some remarkable vintage footage that I'm amazed is available - try Syd Barrett and you'll find some incredible stuff - sound quality is mediocre, but beggars cannot be choosers. I'm hoping the new Naim DAC will make this even easier to listen to - not sure if it can, but my hope is there ....

This is definitely not a boring topic - in fact you are one of the most interesting posters to read.

Still think the 2 best things I have seen on youtube are Howlin Wolf's only live TV performance in 1965. Wtih Delaney Bramlett on guitar and the Rolling Stones sitting at his feet.

The second one is Delaney and Bonnie doing Coming Home with Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Jim Gordon, Bobby Keys and Carl Radle. They really get into a groove wonderful stuff. Eric smiles in the middle of the groove riff. You cans ee he is really into it.

Thanks ewemom ( you're not Welsh are you Confused ) , that was really good, I had never seen Delaney and Bonnie, it was excellent, ( another vote for converging technologies ) that was from the time when "superstars" could actually play an instrument and sing, enjoyed music and jamming - could you imagine that now ?

I could waffle on but people would only put it down to senility

Thanks again
