It's not only the Beatles who are dying in the wrong order.

I'll have a long listen to the 'Piper' box today.

Dear Rupert Bear,

Not too sure what you mean by the RIGHT ORDER.

I am getting quite concerned as my ROCK HEROES from my youth are departing this mortal coil.

It means i am not that young anymore.

Saw DARK SIDE OF THE MOON at the Colston Hall Bristol whan i was at school in the early 1970's.

HMMM that is 35 years ago.

OH DEAR.

Where are my slippers and Pipe.

I ve got a bike,

you can ride it if you like

it has a basket a bell that rings and dings and makes it look good.

or careful with that axe eugene.

psychedelic breakfast.

need i go on.

What a great band.

Sigh

regards David

Sorry David, a rather silly reference to the old Beatles joke (that after Lennon and Harrison died, they were 'dying in the wrong order'). Hope I didn't offend.

I guess my reference was to Mr Waters. Like many others, I may love the early Floyd (say, up to DSOTM) but am not a big fan of what Waters turned the PF into - and indeed with Mr Waters himself. Something about the man inspires unease and a lack of affection. Sort of a psychedelic Phil Collins.

Big Rog is alright, he's blessed with more self-awareness these days, although he still seems to rate himself as the best songwriter his side of Dylan, Lennon and Young. Roll Eyes

Psychedelic or no, Phil Collins he most certainly ain't.

Oddly (having met all of the Floyd apart from Syd), the one it's hardest to warm to is Gilmour. He is just as driven as Waters, but in a quieter, steelier way. Underneath the charm and the good manners is an edginess, a coldness that certainly didn't make me feel very comfortable.

Waters, by contrast is rather sentimental, open, expansive and is capable of a little self-mockery, which I'm not sure Gilmour is capable of.

Rick was lovely though, really gentle, very shy and modest but passionate about music and quietly engaging - even if he did smoke all my fags!

Very harsh. But possibly fair. Smile

Given the choice I would take a waters solo album over a gilmour one.

On an Island anyone?

Agree Scotty - keep it on the very very sad loss of Rick - I picked it up in the press and could n't believe it I did not even know he was ill with the BIG C

Good idea now is for the 3 remaining members to host a gig and donate monies to Cancer charities in memory of Nick one of THE great key board players - surley not to much to ask for??
Posted on: 17 September 2008 by scottyhammer
that would be nice antony but alas i fear it wont happen ! shame.

You're pathetic Kevin.

By the way nobody gives a fukk here about how you got on with David Gilmour, it seems you weren't as important in his life than he was in yours. Don't forget that guys of such stature are forced to have a strong ego in order to just bloody survive among the millions who want something from them.

Sad for Richard Wright, one of the greatest musicians in rock and despite his shyness he had a huge presence when you saw him on stage. We'll remember him.

How's this for ironic then?

There was a microlite crash on the same day as Rick's death and the microlite pilot died.

His name was Nicky Mason.

Regards,

Jon

PS That was a good point you just made, Cheese.

Cheese

I met Rick, DG etc in a professional capacity, through my work. I was merely pointing out the differences in their characters as observed close up. Nothing to do with how well I got on with them (as it happened I got on fine with all of them, including Gilmour, I just didn't find him an especially warm or open person; in contrast Waters, so often painted as the villain of the Floyd, was very open and rather entertaining).

What's so pathetic about that then? What are you getting so worked up about? Oaf!

BTW, nice pieces in the Times and the Independent today.

Fair enough Kevin.

Kevin,

I must add that our perceptions of people are extreme inducements. What I mean is that if you see someone for a short period of time, you induce a character assessment and apply this to them in their long term life.

There are times when you meet someone who is having a bad day and you catch them at the wrong moment, a moment where they snap at you. You cannot then generalise that as being their personality.

Perhaps your mixing with the respective Floyd members has an edge if over-induction.

Jon

Or perhaps waters is a nice bloke and gilmour is a tosser?
Posted on: 26 September 2008 by Consciousmess
Perhaps, but then again does personality even exist as how you are with one person is completely different to how you are with another????!!!
Posted on: 26 September 2008 by Ewan Aye
What's all this about then? We have a thread about the death of Richard Wright, and you are all arguing with each other and trying to decide whether Gilmore is a tosser or Waters is a tosser.
You're worse than me!

I expect that they are both extremely lovely people, but with intense pressures through their careers when they were as good as married, they probably have opinions on each other.
If your friends get divorced, you don't take sides (well, I don't anyway).
Some people are good in social situations and some are not so good.

Can we get back to Richard Wright, and may I urge you all to play Cirrus Minor and remember this guy for the contribution he made the soundtrack of our youth? Whatever the type of music I am immersed in at the time (country and Americana currently), 1967 - 1975 Pink Floyd shaped my youth, what I did, what I went to see, who I associated with as friends - it was like being able to recognise those you were like and those you weren't. I found an identity. As a kid, they mean't so much to me, in fact music was everything - everything revolved around music. Nobody went to parties without records under your arm - it was the whole culture, and Rick Wright was largely the creator of all that. Everyone was so in love with Pink Floyds music - we all felt the same, and we all found an identity with each other.
You cannot underestimate the contribution to our lives that this guy made, albeit unintentionally and probably unknowingly. And God bless him for it.

Aye to that Ewan!

Rick's gone to The Great Gig in the Sky. A sad and irreplaceable loss.

Time to put on DSOTM again...
Posted on: 26 September 2008 by Ewan Aye
oh no Tony...not DSOTM again!
