John Mayer

Having recently returned from L.A I was struck by how popular John Mayer was though I have nothing of his in my collection.
Then today Alishia Keys name checked him (on Radio1) and I'm wondering what sort of music does he do and where to start with his back catalouge please?

Hi Gordon,
'Continuum' contains some great tracks, but is unfortunately a poor recording (on a major label again!). There's some good stuff on 'Room for Squares' too.
But ... there are two EP-ish length CDs of superb recording quality and music. 'Inside Wants Out' and 'The Village Sessions'. Both highly recommended.
Enjoy.
John.

As has already been discussed in another Mayer thread, I strongly disagree that Continuum is poorly recorded. In fact, I think it's very well recorded ... colorful, well balanced, very musical sounding record.
More importantly, I think it's Mayer's best work thus far, by a long shot ... mature songwriting, arrangements, performances ... a classic great album.
All best,
Fred

I just can't get my head around him at the moment. Suppose one day I will, but for me he is in this pool of singer songwriters like Jack Johnson I am not that keen on.

I agree with John. Sorry Fred but I've tried both EU and US pressings and the US one is slightly better but nowhere near as good as the two EPs, or even RFS. Great music all though.
I think John's point is that the major label has made a pig's ear of what is underneath.
RFS is better and the two EPs John mentions are superb.

can't go wrong with JM. Talented musician/producer. The music is truly sensational...one of the best for current artist.
Ryan adams is great also....

Each to his own, but I stand by my ears. I think Continuum is a fabulous pop recording in every way. I've only heard the US pressing.
By the way, I'm not sure how valid it is to compare the recording quality of two different programs. Apples and oranges.
All best,
Fred

Hi Fred,
Our disparity of opinion on the 'Continuum' issue is interesting. I made sure I got a USA manufactured CD - and reckon it sounds pants. Murky, muddled and lacking definition, clarity and dynamic range. I'd put it in the bottom 10% of recording quality in my collection.
It clearly works well for you. Maybe you have an earlier pressing which is better?
I've found that some equipment simply 'works' or doesn't with a certain style of recording. What do you use as a matter of interest?
John.

Not meaning to speak for FS, but if I recall an earlier post, it is a Steinway
