PS3 3AM

A couple of times over the past couple of weeks I've been awake in our study, late at night, reading. At exactly 3AM my son's PS3 'wakes up'. The hard disk seems to spin up for a few seconds then stops. 15 or so seconds later it does it again.

Does anyone have any idea what it's doing?

It isn't connected to the internet, and the hard disk activity is for too short a time to be doing a backup (I would have thought).

I would suggest that he switches it off properly before going to bed, then you won't have this problem at all.

But I think that is part of the oddness of this behaviour - it has been properly switched off (although it is still plugged in).

Strange. I'd assumed he was just putting it on standby rather than actually moving the power switch to "off". I haven't got a PS3 anymore (gave it to one of my sons-in-law) so can't check for myself.
