Yorkshire Dales / Skipton
Posted by: Sloop John B on 23 June 2006
Well the holidays are booked and in 2 short weeks the Sloops will be wandering the Dales.
I'd appreciate guidance/advice on a few things.
- the best route from Chester to Skipton. I know I can stick it into the AA or RAC site but I prefer human advice.
- the places/attractions that would elicit the reaction "what do you mean you didn't go to "x" when you were in the Dales. I'd appreciate a few "x" suggestions. We are 5 (in total) with 3 children aged 8-12.
- The places that elicit the - reaction "Oh, I could have told you not to go to "y". If there are any "y's" I'd appreciate knowing beforehand.
- Good family restaurants in the Skipton area. Usually when a restaurant calls themselves family friendly it means they serve chips and chicken nuggets. Fine for a shopping trip but we will need all the energy we can get to sustain us through the "x's" above. So any recommendation from people who live in/ visit the area would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for all your help

It's a few years since we've been to Skipton however from what I recall our lot enjoyed Bolton Abbey, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden and the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (as used in the film The Railway Children).
If you're going to visit York then the Railway museum is pretty good but we found the City Museum to be the best in the town. The underground Viking thing I found a bit underwhelming but the kids like it.

Mail me at home (I think you had the address before) and I'll send you loads of stuff this weekend when I've time, or perhaps we can chat on the phone.

The first Y to avoid is
Yorkshire.

Please do avoid it Bob...we are very selective about the sort of people we like to have visit...and those who live in footballer chav counties need not apply

Thanks Steve and Bruce. I've got a good few suggestions from you both.
If anyone else has anything to add I'd be only to delighted.

Get a takeaway pizza one night from Chicos! One of the finest in the country, Skipton + Milan + Orlando ... evidently... ha ha.

For route, M6 to Preston then A59 across to Skipton.
Place to visit: URL=http://www.yorkshirenet.co.uk/theforbiddencorner/]The Forbidden Corner[/URL] should be OK for your kids ages. You need to telephone in advance to book (planning restrictions)
Nice drive out while you're up there head up to Kettlewell and turn right through / towards Coverdale/Leyburn. Fab and quiet - but don't go up with a slipping clutch! We used to stay around Leyburn on hols - there's quite a few nice villages in Wensleydale. West Burton was our favourite - lovely village green and there's a waterfall / stream with good damming opportunities!

1 Bolton Abbey (Walk up to and be frightened by the Strid!))
2 Keighley and Worth Valley Railway
3 Salt's Mill down in Bradford (if you're into History and/or David Hockney)

Thanks LILYFY, the AA was recommending quite a torturous route M6>M60>A56>M65>A56 etc, your way looks much simpler.
Have you any ideas about a nice place to stop for a bit of food once we hit the A56?
Also thanks Shayman, Fozz and Derek I've noted your suggestions.

Skipton, home of Castle Acoustics. Call ahead and see if they will give you the 10p tour. One of the last functioning real cabinet shops left in the UK. They're so good, they make the cabinets for a number of other famous UK brands (can you guess one of them?)
In the village, see Skipton Castle, which is the actual one that Castle's logo is based on.

Skipton,
Call in at the Woolly Sheep for good pub grub, and more importantly, a pint of Timothy Taylor's.

Last call on help please on where to stop for a bit of food on the way from Holyhead to Skipton.
All going well we hit Holyhead at 1pm on Sunday afternoon. So if there are any suggestions for before we hit the M6 or when we leave it at A56 I would much appreciate it.

Mmmmm, nice. Might move there
Where is the saggy-roofed house?

Contrary to what Sloop's photos suggest, Yorkshire folk do have running hot/cold water, electricity and that new fangled Interweb

Some fantastic photo's there. Yorkshire really does have a ragged nostalgia-inducing beauty that you just don't get in a lot of other places.
You get a different sort of natural beauty down here in the South. Both gorgeous but in very different ways.

The saggy roofed house is in Haworth just down for the Bronte house/museum - well worth a visit. I reread Wuthering Height while in the dales. as is the other b/w picture. the last 2 are of the house we stayed in (converted barn) and the view from it. Skipton castle being the indoor shot - beautifully cool inside while it was 31 outside, I'd hate to visit in winter!
