Essential Stones

I've been meaning to add to my meagre Stones collection for a while now.
I have Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile...
But what are the essential Stones albums?

The only one I might add is "Beggar's Banquet".

Beggars yes but not a great lover of Goats Head.
Black and Blue is an ok album but one you may want to look at is Get Yer Ya's Ya's Out.

It has to be Beggars and YaYas. For a pretty good overview without buying the whole back catalogue Rolled Gold is great for the Decca years and Forty Licks covers their whole career.

And as usual ROTF's suggestion is spot on.

Besides those mentioned I think any good Stones collection should include:
Aftermath UK (1966) Probably the first great stones album ie not much filler. This marks the start of their instrumental experimentation period.
Flowers (1967) An odds and sods collection which actually works as an album. This pulls together some of their singles and b-sides and clearly shows their growth from a blues cover band.
Hot Rocks (1972) To a large extent supplanted by the London Singles Collection Stuart detailed, this is a compliation of the time and has the advantage of being only two discs and just concentrates on the hits and better known album tracks.
Some Girls (1978)The last truly great stones album (Tatto You has its moments, but also a lot of filler). They still sound angry here, which is how the Stones should play - pissed off and loud!
Whilst I'd also suggest December's Children, Between the Buttons and Out of Our Heads these albums have the problem of being released in different play lists for the US and UK markets. In some cases, nearly half the album is different.

Giles

The only Rolling Stones albums I kept are Beggar's Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Mainstreet. They date from 68 (BB) to 72 (Exile). My wife still has original copies of Aftermath and Between the Buttons and indeed the singles box that ROTF mentioned. If push comes to shove I prefer Exile and Beggar's Banquet.

From the 60's : Everything they recorded for Decca (Even 'Satanic Majesties' is worth it, Don't get 'Love You Live')
70's : Sticky Fingers, Exile, Black and Blue, Some Girls
80's : Tatto You, Dirty Work.
90's : Stripped
00's: A Bigger Bang
Of course, if you're not a big Stones fan, get Banquet through Exile. However, if you don't like the Stones, you might check and see if you have a pulse !

Not one of my favourite psych albums - it has got a couple of gems. Avoid the SACD hybrid though as the CD bit doesn't do the record any favours. There are tracks from it on the Singles collection that show it is the person who mastered the SACD who is at fault, not the Stones. She's A Rainbow is a great track.

As psychedelic music, no doubt about it, the album is a failure. However, I have grown to love every hedonistic moment...
favorite segue,... after a few random coughs in the background, Mick's barely audible voice intoning "...where's that joint ?.."

'Athermath' and 'Some Girls' has always been my favourites, but lately I rediscovered my early CD of 'Between the Buttons'. It is interesting to note how different the two 1960's album's sound!
