What you have always needed.....a new Hutter thread
Posted by: Mick P on 29 May 2001
Just a quick note to let you know that I ordered the Hutter stuff this morning. 2 Base units plus six shelves in cherry wood finish. Delivery in about 2 weeks. (Sorry about mentioning the two weeks Jonathan.)
Much to my delight, Phonography were able to do the best deal out of all the European dealers that I contacted.
Next job is to dispose of that oak unit.
I shall let you know how easy/difficult it is to assemble Hutter and of course how it sounds.
I shall be buying some Mana in the autumn for the baby system in the dining room, so I shall be able to compare the two by wandering from one room to another. However if the Hutter exceeds my wildest dreams, then its more of the stuff in the autumn.
Regards
Mick

That is a surprise!

Could you let us know prices?

As you said that your sons are really nostalgic about the Oak cabinet, can you off-load it onto them?
Or are you just going to have to:

BURN IT..... har har har haaar

Hutter have slapped some large increases on their prices this year, way way above inflation. Also the prices are more level across Europe as currency rates stabalise. This stopped me doing what you did last year.
John / andrew
I negotiated a deal with with Phonography and what you get is up to you. The price I agreed is not for general release as that would be unfair on Phonography but if you don't ask, you don't get.
Base units now retail at £151 each
Shelves now retail at £133 each
Above prices inc del and VAT
But you can haggle.

I KNOW that you & Sue will be delighted with your new arrivals. Keep us posted with your findings.
Jason,
I think I did my nut up quite tight (ooo err etc. etc.). I thought it was only products from the dark side that required slackish nuts. Did you try them tight & then not? Sorry, this is getting a bit anal, but I try to get the last ounce from my system.
Bob
Please do not apologise. I find it fascinating that the tightness of nuts is not such a critical issue on a well made rack such as Hutter. Obviously a sign of inherent quality.
I shall enthrall you with a study of sonic stability across the nut tightness range once my unit arrives. I bet the Mana mob don't get this sort of excitment.
Regards
an utterly happy Mick
Please do not fail to keep us all fully informed as to the tightness of your nuts.
Trepidatiously yours,
Alex.
The Hutter arrived two days ago, so the total delivery time from placement of order was 11 days. Not bad as it had to come across the channel.
I ordered two bases and six shelvee, so I have two units side by side 4 high. I decided to set it up last night and let the black boxes warm up again overnight before doing any serious listening.
Job number one...shift that bloody great oak wall unit. It took 30 minutes for my 2 strapping sons to move it into the garage. I could only watch because my arm is still sore following a recent operation.
Next the wife vacuumed to clear up several years of dust etc and then my sons brought in two heavy boxes. They then cleared off leaving me to unpack and check everything was there.
The most fiddly bit was getting the two base boards level. With Mana you have an allen key to adjust the grub screw, with Hutter you have to twist it with your fingers which isn't that easy.
Once that bit was done, it was a complete doddle to assemble the rest, three shelve took about 15 minutes and most of that time was spent drinking tea.
Then came the bit I hate, connecting up the Naim boxes, I have nightmares that it wont play after I have put it all together. Big relief, the system played.
I resisted the urge to play music because the black boxes had been switched off for a couple of hours and I wanted to first hear it all warmed up.
I played some music at 2.00pm today (18 hours later) and it sounds so bloody musical its unbelieveable. I played some Jacque Delussier Jazz which includes heavy drums as well as top end cymbals and it is just so good. This has been a good investment.
The best way of describing it is to say that it seems to let more music out in a softer way than Mana which is the only other racking I have heard. Everything seems natural and the SBL's seem more full of music.
Of course, I have to ask myself was it worth it and should I have gone for Mana ?
My observations are that its one hell of a lot nicer looking than Mana and the assembly is fixed so it will not go out of tune.
Does it sound better than Mana......I do not know and never will until I put my kit onto it and compare the two.
All I can say is 3 things.
1. Stands do make a big difference.....I should have done this years ago.
2. Hutter seems to generate warm natural music.
3. Whatever rack you choose, be it Hutter, Mana or Fraim, forget about the others and enjoy the one you have got.
I am off to listen to more music and will try and persuade Mrs Mick to stay in tonight rather than going out for a meal....I don't rate my chances there.

Mick

also this guy has more Naim gear in his room than several Naim dealers put together.
Good News Mick. Really pleased that you have finally replaced that large unit with something your gear deserves and something that does it justice. When I heard your system I thought that it was very good, but your furniture was probably holding it back.
You have removed the weakest link!
Happy Future Listening

My, how standards have dropped around here. I thought that the Parry household would be completely spotless, much in the manner of the Kleenex Quilted Velvet advertisement on that new fangled colour television thing...
John
PS. Mick, enjoy the Hutter, and remember, it doesn't matter whether it is better or worse or whatever, just so long as it does it for you, an audio viagra if you will...
Glad you are enjoying the stand. A question however. Did you say you were going to purchase some Mana as well?
Whatever happened to "vulgarity and bad taste"?
I guess after the Mana all you'll need is to take delivery of your new BMW...
I did state on the other forum that I would buy some Mana for my dining room system. The decor of the dining room would not suffer too much despite the ugly appearance of Mana.
My problem is that I really rate the Fraim and I know that I should have held back for another month or two to save up the cash to buy one.
The advantage of having a Mana and Hutter system in the same house is that I could charge say £25.00 for any of you guys to listen and compare and the extra income could finance my impending retirement. Not that I am a money grabbing git, but us humble public servants must supplement our meagre existance somehow.
The wife is off to one of her floral art classes soon.....yes we have a nice crystal glass vase on the Hutter....and I shall enjoy an evening of solitude, whiskey and music.
Regards
Mick
Yes you most definitely can! I had my LP12 on phase 2 Mana & switched to Hutter a few months ago. It sounds great. I'm still not sure if Hutter is better than Mana under the LP12, but IMHO all other components are. I found my 250's were a disaster on Mana, but sound good on Hutter. YMMV.
Bob.
I have my Garrard 401 on the top shelf of the Hutter and it sounds great.
I cannot comment as to whether it would sound better on Mana because I haven't tried it but I have no complaints about the Hutter.
The only time I might go a a Mana is with a wall shelf but the Garrard is a heavy old beast and I would not want to risk it coming from the wall.
As previously stated, stands are a compromise between looks and sonic performance and only you can decide whats best in your case.
You can always listen to my system if you are ever near Swindon.

Mick
I guess that you have got the spikes on the bottom of your rack & not the nylon feet?
Just had to check as you did not mention this.
How does Sue enjoy the look of the rack?
Kind regards,
Bob.
PS: Just like the 'other' stuff Hutter does improve over a period of time.
I have just got back from a quick week in Greece and am feeling somewhat shattered.
To answer your question, the Hutter is standing on spikes, I remember Paul Stephenson advising someone that spikes beat the rubber feet hands down.
Sue likes the look of the cherry wood and wants the wood to darken more as it will do with age, but when I had it up and running she reckoned that the best finish would have been the piano black. What can you do?
I am due for some listening tonight assuming I can stay awake. I am surprised that it sounds better with time, but then the same evidently applies to Mana. I will let you know tomorrow.
Regards
Mick
