What power amp?

Posted by: Wiltshireman on 09 March 2003

I have just given my son my old 32.5 pre amp and he wonders what power amp he can use without the expense of a power supply. I think second hand is where he will go so older models would be preferable. Many thanks in anticipation.

Whats the budget?

I gather that 32.5 plus 250 is a mighty fine combination. Check eBay and Loot for examples.
If you indicate how much can be spent suggestions will be made.

nap 90, 140, and 180, you need a power supply for a 250.

Hi Mike,
yes I realise that the 32.5/250 make a fine system for I have had that combo for over 12 years but you also need a hi cap as Mathew has added. Budget is as little as pos but a quick look on Hifi for sale .com found a 90 at £275 so that is probably the amount needed to give my son his first taste of Naim (welcome to the finest club in the world son). thanks everyone for your input on this. Wow wish I had a dad like you. I went off to college with a radio shack receiver and speakers. but like cars start with the economy model and let him upgrade at his own rate. A 90 is just great in small spaces with efficient speakers. that's the next big question, I vote for Spendor 3/5, don't want to blow the neighbors away.

Don't forget the 160, which is a logical partner that will power the pre-amp.

I had a 20 year old one, and sent it back to Naim to be breathed on. The power supply section can be uprated to 180 spec and makes it a cracking amp for the money.

Good luck.

Although a 250 (or a pair of 135s) would mean buying a separate power supply for the 32.5, you don't need a hiCap. The 32.5 used to be powered by a SNAPS. The snaps isn't as good as the hicap, but they do the job and are cheaper. There are still plenty of these around and they seem to cost up to £100. IIRC all the other power amps (exclude the new 300/500 etc given the circumstances) can feed the pre amps.

Whichever power amp you buy, if its second hand, consider its age and history. Power amps deteriorate with age and need to be fitted with new capacitors every 10 years or so. Budget about £125 if you can deliver to Salisbury.......which for Wiltshire Man shouldn't be too difficult. call Naim, their service department is superb and will eagerly give you advice and typical prices. They will also give you any known history of a particular amp (serial number) before you buy it.

Cheers
