Balanced Systems

Posted by: solid state on 27 January 2004

I am now in the happy position of having some extra spends for mY system . Smile

My pre-amp is currently a new 202 , and whilst I appreCiate that a 200 power amp is its "natural" partner , I was wondering if I could succesfully pair a new style 250 with it (a power amp I have always desired) , or will this be a bit of a mullet?

Will I need any extra PSU's etc for the 250 ?

I will also be adding a hi-cap to the 202 if it helps

Sounds fine to me, but what do I know? I'm planning on pairing a flatcapped CD5 and 212 with a 200 to drive some dynes.

Is that a mullet as well?

In the past a 72/HiCap/250 was the clasic Naim combo. There are several threads about which is best 72 or 102 but with a NAPSC for me then the 102 wins over a 72 and more so with a HiCap. I've not heard a 202 but from the forum it's a step up from the 102. As I run a 102/NAPSC/HiCap/Olive 250 and it's good Big Grin I'd say 202/HiCap/New 250 is a no brainer, so go for the 250,

I remember when I pluged my oliver one in, the first thought was, with IBLs, where did that bass come from!

From my experience with a 102, make sure you get the NAPSC as it makes a BIG difference. If you have to delay the 250 for a few months so what! You'll get to know what the NAPSC does and then find out what the 250 can do.

Enjoy

Excellent news - I already have a napsc and a flatcap 2 hooked up to the pre .

I was really concerend about a mis-match and losing out sonically if this combo was "unbalanced" but from what your saying Stuart this may not be the case . Anyway , as I currently run a 140 I would expect this proposed combo to be a fairly big positive change .

My dealer did say though (or one of his employess did) that a 202 with a 250 "sounds like the treble has been turned down"

I wonder if he was talking complete tosh!!?

It may be that your dealers 250 had more control and produced a smoother sound. Some people see this as "lost treble".

I run a cdx2+202+hc2+npsc2+250.2 and it is glorious. You can't go wrong here.

He's a laugh, as if you can turn the treble down on a naim system... Wink

er.. you can't balance a Naim system. If you want a balanced system I'd recommend the Sugden Masterclass. Smile

You can - you either pop the tweeters with a blunt instrument, disconnect the biwire links, or get a 4 phonos/DIN lead and a graphic EQ..

He he he...
